Westminster Accounts

What I find more distasteful are large donations especially ones made to individual MPs. The majority may be genuine donations but it always runs the risk of being seen as a bribe/back hander/palm greasing and at the very least a conflict of interest.
In most other walks of life or industry these donations would be frowned upon or possibly investigated under the Bribery act 2010.

I have no idea Jack. I don't really have a problem with some jobs. The shadow mental health minister is an A&E doctor. Some roles are clearly to garner favours for the company. Isn't lammys biggest outside salary lbc? Hardly a political role.
I think this has to one of the exceptions as I believe those in the medical profession have to do a minimum amount of work per year or else they risk losing the ability to go back to their old jobs.

I honestly haven’t seen the list I saw starmer getting quizzed about lammy specifically. I don’t think it’s party specific, as said earlier they are all at it!
"Honestly". What a coincidence you picked the owner labour MP. what are the chances?

1 in 20 I guess...

There's some bizarre donations received. Simon Clarke got a gift of a couple of grand from the Lawn Tennis Association. WTF. Although I was surprised his was only about £20k in total, or at least they're the declared ones.

Its all about the money for most MP's though and the whole system is open to corruption. The expenses scandal showed that and its still going on.

Pretty sure I read that was Wimbledon tickets.

I didn’t pick smalltown I was watching the news and they were asking Starmer specifically about Lammie. That was the only name mentioned - in hindsight presumably because as you have kindly pointed out he is the only Labour MP on the list.

For sake of accuracy, one other Labour MP in top 20 earnings list (Jess Phillips) and one SNP (I think). The other 17 are Conservative.

50% of Jess Phillips outside earnings (£60K+) are from Simon and Shuster. Presumably royalties from the book she published. You can also see her fee from "Hat Trick" - the appearance(s) on HIGNFY?

It is all in the link above, and pretty easy to look at any MP. I saw mine has had £3K since Dec 2019.

The earnings list doesn't include donations. Poor Chris Rea. A namesake of his (NI businessman) has donated £100K to Rishi Sunak.

It wasn't particularly aimed at Lammy. He's in the papers because he's the highest-earning Labour MP, way behind a list of Tory legal rent-seekers. We've only recently bought in 'family friendly' hours in the Commons, after centuries of opposition from barristers reluctant to reduce earnings from their day jobs.

The list of donations received is here.

With a donation can the MO spend it as they see fit or are there rules that are policed around how it can be spent, does anyone know.

The article you cite includes this:

"MPs can accept donations for a variety of reasons, including carrying out research on a policy they are promoting, holding constituency events to bring different groups together on an issue, visiting another country to understand how a policy works, and for running their office."

and this:

"Sky News has estimated it takes at least £250,000 to run a leadership campaign, which is reflected in the amounts and reasons given to those who ran.
Out of the top 10 highest donor recipients, seven ran for leader or deputy leader of their party."

So Chris Rea (the other one) ...... "gave Mr Sunak's campaign £100,000 after saying he was "horrified at the prospect of Liz Truss actually implementing her promises as I am numerate and it was clear to me that it would be bad for the UK"."

Which I assume is a legitimate reason for a donation, and use of it, under the existing rules/guidelines.

The MP concerned will publish accounts of how the money is spent in their office. My local MPs have them on their parliamentary websites.

Yeah it's an odd one jack, not all second jobs are equal in terms of susceptability of corruption but it does allow some whataboutery
