Water Bill

I'm thinking about going for a meter. Martin Lewis reckons I would be about £30 a month better off in a 4 bed det with only me and the Mrs in it these days.
I just wondered if we were to sell if it might put a big family off .

Doubt anyone even finds out about that too they move in

Very unlikely. A 4 bed detached is going to set a family back a couple of hundred grand. They aren't going to quibble about an extra tenner a month.

I think it depends on where you live, but I believe if you get one fitted and you dont see the savings you can request it is removed as long as you do this within 12 months. If you move into a house where one is already installed, it think you are correct and you cant get it removed.

Bought my house a few years back and was disappointed to find out we had a water meter at the time, especially with having a young family. Since moving I would say on average I'm saving around £20 a month compared to what I paid without the meter at my previous address.

Our usage habits haven't reduced, if anything we use more water now, in the summer I power wash the drive, always watering plants, washing cars etc etc.

I would recommend a water meter to anyone now.

Mines just gone down from £22 to £17 per month. I’m on the meter I presume it’ll go back up in the summer when I start watering the garden.

You’re both right

you have 2 years to decide if one gets fitted but they don’t remove it, they just revert you unmetered. The next resident then gets the meter without option (for NWL anyway)

The biggest charges from a meter is usually from drips and leaks, make sure none of your taps or toilets have a drip first.

It you aren't on a water meter there is a calculation used to decide your bill based on the number of rooms in your house. We save massively because we don't have kids but have a 4 bed house so those assumptions would be way off.

I believe it is two years for you to see the savings and ask to go back to Water Rates but if you do they don't remove the meter, they just stop reading it.
When you move the new owner doesn't get a choice, they will be billed based on usage.
