We had years of crap immobile fullbacks, so when Liburd arrived it was novel as he enjoyed having the ball. It was like playing a gangly right footed winger at left back, from memory he’d end up coming inside with the ball into danger. It was usually nervously entertaining.
He was only slight and was sometimes overpowered on diagonals by the division 2 brutalists, so though he was quite popular he was soon forgotten and offloaded when the likes of Clayton Blackmore landed.
I vaguely remember Bob Mortimer being interviewed on a tv programme that Sean Hughes presented whilst watching the boro when Liburd scored his one goal. Which I suppose is a nice epitaph.
It was all quite representative of the late Lennie era. I liked the whole thing immensely.
