Warnock on Boro’s recruitment team

I do question what these full time recruitment people have been doing for years, but we’re already seeing where they’ve been going wrong...

Interesting isn’t it. Looks like recruitment has been based on stats rather than scouting. I’ve always thought that stats are just an aid, one of a whole set of considerations when buying a player.

Think it shows how myopic we have been and it obviously has failed.

to be fair to Neil and his assessment of defenders, he did say that Sol Bamba is a better defender than Virgil Van Dyke.

i do like his openness and perhaps honesty, but as i said in a previous thread, his not always correct.

If ever there's been a jobs for the boys situation going on, this is it. Full time jobs and they continually come up with duffers. The only thing I can surmise is that Gill has compromising photos of Gibson. How is the bloke STILL in a job?!!!!

I wouldn’t take that seriously.

The full quote was “ "I just think Sol’s a very, very good defender. He’s nowhere near like Van Dijk with the ball at his feet or calmness on the ball - (but) in a defensive situation I’d back Sol," Warnock said.

A week later he did make fun of himself “I got a bit carried away, I’d probably been drinking to be honest”.

This observation might ingratiate him with the fans who have never had a good word to say about Boro's recruitment department, but it smacks as bit of Gordon Strachan to me.

When you look at what we’ve spent and what we’ve got over the last 10 years it’s difficult to argue.

He did also go on to explain they have to scout differently at present because they cannot watch the games in person.
Remember Brentford recruitment is very much led on stats.

Our recruitment has been pretty dire since we signed the likes of Adomah, Tomlin, Ayala and Clayton and that was 6 years ago, The odd success story in amongst a litany of *****. Most being absolute stinkers paying over the odds for players not suited to how we play. How can a commentator/wine dealer manage to get the head scouts role of a club, especially given he thought Gary O’Neil was the best midfielder in the championship when we went down

I think he's playing to the fans a bit definitely. He's admitted having a look at the forums hasn't he?

First of all he didn't say he was surprised we had full time staff working on recruitment. Full time staff makes sense surely? Why would you only have them part time? He said he was surprised we had so many.

Secondly I doubt he really looked at a player for 20 seconds and established they couldn't defend. Worrying if he did, I don't think anyone could. It's huge exagerration for effect. I'd hope he'd at least watched a full game before coming to any conclusions.

Funny though how many people think that's great. Probably the same people who accuse the club of signing players based on YouTube footage alone.

He's old school so probably trusts his own judgement over stats etc which is his perogative. His record speaks for itself. But you still need that database and scouting network as a starting point. I think he's implied that much at least, so don't think we'll be ripping it all up like Strachen did.

Cannot believe some of the clubs he has worked at never had a full time recruitment team. Agree with what festa5 says in that he is playing to the fans a bit.

Playing to the fans? Yeah, lots of fans who accept that Gill is a competent scout because he played for the club and is 'one of our own'.

looks like a lot of head banging on the way, never worked with full time recruitment before... people have to justify positions. Some recuitment has been woeful recently

Stats are useful, but we should not be buying based on stats alone - you don't need scouts if you do it on stats.

The Moneyball philosophy in baseball was based on stats often in contrast to what experienced scouts thought. Mind you baseball is more suited to stats.

What interests me is when you see a player doing well in say Division 1 or 2 and you have to decide if he can step up.

Look at Jordan Rhodes - scored for fun in Division 1 and even in the Championship at times, but no chance in the Premiership. Trevor Senior was the same.

Another key issue is looking at a player at 20 and making a decision if he will progress and if yes how much progression.
