After watching a few recorded war movies over the last couple of days, two of the excellent films, the Great Escape & Von Ryan's Express, has the same British actor in both filums, another clue, which you may guess who it is from my clue, his sister in law is my next door neighbour 😕

Who is he?

No googling

If you're in to your war films I would highly recommend the 1985 Russian film 'Come and See' Erimus. Really brutal and hard hitting stuff but it is brilliant.

I have not googled .. honest

My guess is David MaCullum as he is young enough to have a sister till alive.

Ref Come and See - I have it on DVD - a bit weird for me, prefer Stalingrad - made by the same guy as Das Boot.

There is so much potential for films about what happened on the Eastern Front that I ever never seen or have not been made for example Battles for Konigsberg or the same for the Battle for Budapest.

Know what you mean. White Tiger is an excellent, little-seen Eastern Front movie. Russian movie about a ghost tank, really weird and gritty.

WWII Western Front, Normandy etc is done to death really, hard to improve on Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan and the like.

I'd love to see an epic Band of Brothers-style mini-series set in the east, maybe about the German retreat from Stalingrad onwards. Amazing subject matter. I guess they don't have the budgets of the Americans and no-one wants to fund projects where Germans or Soviets are sympathetic characters. But yeah agree, I'm yet to see the definitive movie or TV show about the Eastern Front.

Can be done, look at Das Bot, and Cross of Iron, plus All Quiet..........

Isn't John Leyton the only one of the main characters from The Great Escape still alive ?
Yes he is, and according to IMDb he was still doing cameos up until 10 years ago. I listened to a few of his songs last night and was surprised at how many I remember

Look out for the German made mini series Generation war. It follows the experiences of some young Germans during WW2. Very good.

Bit off topic, but does anyone know of a WW2 film where an American bomber has crashed in the desert/N Africa perhaps, where we see the crew trying and failing to leave the aircraft but they are actually ghosts, until their name-tags are found??? Spoiler alert

It was inspired by the real life story of "Lady be Good" a B-24 Liberator. Due to a compass error they flew over the desert thinking they were over the sea when they parachuted out. The real B-24 crash landed in the desert and the remaining crew tried to walk away and died. The wreckage was found by an oil exploration team. In the film a war graves team found all but one. The ghosts of those found were released to go to rest, the unrecovered one appeared to be doomed for eternity but one of the expedition worked out where the body would be and collected him. I'll try to find the film.
