Villa bid for Morgan Rogers

I don’t think it really matters what villa offered to start with. Could be a quid. The point is the information is out there and Rogers and his agent will know about it. His head will have been turned and now our hands will be forced to sell a player who wants to go.

Anything above £8m will be great business. Anything north of £10m is amazing.

That's all well and good , but , the club is a business.
It has to keep afloat, and to do that unfortunately by selling some talent most , if not every season.
If 10 mil came on the table, as a business, we'd HAVE to consider it .
Well I personally think that insane. If the club know his ability level and his potential and they consider at that price, knowing he's potentially worth much more then that's weak and the model will not work.

We are meant to be putting ourselves in a position of strength not weakness caving at any offer north of ten million.

We need to show steel and backbone and back out investment. We will never hit the jackpot and the model will never work because every £50 million player we unearth we will **** ourselves and accept any ten million offer any time they have their first good spell with us and a club comes sniffing.

Do it properly or don't bother. Like someone said earlier about Brighton. Trusting their investments and held out for what they knew was an acceptable figure to them.

If it's just to balance the books every year and sell a player a year for ten million profit then it's not the Brighton model we believed.

No,I am just trying to be realistic
I am not saying that's what he is worth, just what Villa will be up to.
You're not being realistic, your post was all assumptions, and negative ones at that. It lacked balance.

"5 Million tops" - complete guess that doesn't even factor in market value of similar players sold ina similar market to a similar market

"we get a 20% sell on fee" - sell on fees to top prem clubs are largely irrelevant, because those clubs keep them for most of their career, so this assumptions makes little sense

"Obviously I don't know but can't see us getting a big wedge upfront." - at least you admit you don't know, but it's another baseless assumption

"He'll now want to go" - another baseless assumption

"Villa can't spend money now" - so then they are trying to get a player on the cheap, That doesn't usually work with players under long contracts

"I can see a compromise" - another baseless assumption.

The facts are that they will need to give us a sizable compensation to let him go.

What worries me slightly about this whole situation is the leak to journalists FR and DO. No chance it’s come from our end, given our reported rejection only went to the northern echo. Which means it’s either from the players agent, or from Villa. Someone’s using some tactics somewhere.

It doesn't matter which, until we accept a bid, it won't happen.

Villa have a tight budget with ffp, so I think it would be fairly easy to price them out of a January move. We can then see what the summer brings and what we want to do.

Tend to disagree with the first paragraph. Its not as if he is on big money so if he sulks and loses form he is out of the team. We dont really lose that much. It would be a shame as he is now developing nicely but I doubt Gibson will allow us to get shafted. We have as much to lose by letting him go on the cheap with regards to how the club is being run. Players cannot be allowed to run the show, especially players who have literally had 6 months in the first team.

It’s very underhand.

4mill is taking the pizz. We have him on contract for another 3 and a half years.

It would sound like someone is talking to the press to try to unsettle him. Can't blame them for trying I suppose

A few points if I may.

1. I have been amongst the vocal in criticising Scott. The strength of interest in Rogers shows there is a considerable profit to be made on him. Enough profit to cover the fees paid for the other permanent recruits. Hats off, fair play for the recruitment of Rogers and Carrick's development of him. Major piece of Humble Pie served to self.

2. I posted after the first match of the season that he has obvious talent. I've posted so, consistently since then. However, I am surprised at some of the valuations of him given his current state. Archer was a tremendous goalscorer and great line leader here. He only went for £18m.
He is good and has lots of potential, but there are some posters on here that are shapeshifters.

3. Ramsey was a better player than Rogers while at Boro in my eyes. He's pulled up no trees at Burnley, but he did very well here. He had more impact on matches here than Rogers has IMHO. Nobody knows how each will progress, or how fitness will go.

4. I'd personally far rather keep Rogers than sell, even for a big fee. If Villa will pay big for him now, then that interest will not die. If his sale enabled the signing of a better player, then fine. In Jan window I don't think it will.
If we need to generate funds and sell a player to strengthen, I'd far rather keep Rogers and sell McGree.

That's life without the promotion up down money to get us started unfortunately, it's hard to do a " Brighton or Brentford " without that parachute money protection to keep all those best assets for the extra season

Every young player has potential, but they all have differing values , to both your squad footballing wise, and as a business asset.

Thing is ... He's nowhere near a 20 million player yet is he ? ..He's not having an akpom or gyokeres season.
Has he the potential to be that in the next 12 to 18 months ? Of course.
But playing for England?? Only if Palmer, Bellingham and Foden, plus whomever else are injured .
And we do have a plethora of ' behind the 9 ' options ( whether good enough or not , we've quite a few on the payroll)

I'd be suggesting that Hackneys value is treble MR to us right now, both in potential and value to our playing.
If Howson retires , and O'Brien went back ... We're fked middle of the park next year without HH.
And Hackney is going to be better than ward prowse and Kelvin Phillips inside 2 years

I’d definitely be wanting £8-£10m for Roger’s, with a decent sell on % at the absolute minimum.

The issue will come with regards to how much Rogers and his agent want to push the move if Villa are not willing to move on their initial offer.

I’d be disappointed to sell him, but it’s the nature of the beast and the new “model”.
