Yet Josh Coburn (19 years old) has been given a squad number 🤔.
You’ve missed the point. He’s “in the squad”. Bilongo and Hackney are not. They’re in the u23 squad. Not first team.
I don't see the point we're apparently missing?
Coburn is guaranteed to be playing at least 1 game this season, which is why he's been given a number.
Bilongo and Hackney are in the U23s, but they can be given a squad number at any time, after the window closes, because they're under 21, so they don't need one now.

Bilongo will be nowhere near our squad this season, or shouldn't be, he was playing level 7 6 months ago.

Sam Forlarin signed in May 2019 from level 7 and was in our squad the next year for the 20/21 season, with a squad number (https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/squad-numbers-for-202021-season).

Jones signed the same year from level 7, and was brought into the squad a few months later before being loaned out to Scotland.

Why do people think 12 outfield players has us sorted in positions ?

What about injuries? Loss of form? Suspension?

Or fielding a bench???

Folarin was a flop.

Jones needed 18 months to make an FA cup appearances, he needed 2 years to be a proper first team squad member instead of a filler, and even then it was a situation like today where it was necessity not design.

Bilongo might be in next season, but I can't see it right now. I think his path could be similar, 6 months in the U23s getting some 1-to-1 coaching, then packed off to QotS in January to get some experience.

Hackney will be loaned out, like last year
Wouldn't be too surprised if Hackney goes on a permanent if we get an offer you know. I wonder how well his spitting incident went down with the club last season.

Being a flop or not is irrelevant.

We're not saying they'll be in the starting 11, but you can add to your 25 man squad with youth players...

2021 - 2022 - https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/squad-numbers-announced-for-202122 - Jones, Robinson, Sivi
2020 - 2021 - https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/squad-numbers-for-202021-season - Folarin, Stubbs
2019 - 2020 - https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/squad-numbers-for-201920-season - PADDY READING? Wearne, Liddle, Burrell, Coulson, Malley, Walker
2018 - 2019 - https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/boros-squad-numbers-confirmed-for-201819-season - Wing, Chapman, a 16 year old Wood...

It happens every year. This year won't be any different.... and Bilongo should be the one to do it.

We need a squad of 25 by the beginning of September, so a lot of recruiting till to go. I would hope 2 more players are in by the WBA game.

We must have a number of players without a squad number namely Hall, Fisher, Ikpeazu and Akpom.

There is also the young lad from Watford.

A lot of loan players do appear in the last week of August. I would expect we will pick up three loan players again.

We had bigger squads back then, those kids only rarely made the bench, as it stands these lads are on the bench and one injury away from being first choice backup. Say Bola gets a knock, then you are looking at Bilongo on the bench and coming on for Giles.

I wouldn't compare Bilongo with the youth players either. He has had 6 months of professional coaching, Chapman, Coulson, Malley etc. had about 2-3 years minimum of pro coaching plus another 2+ years with our academy sides.

I'm not against having a smattering of youth players, but its very early for that kid, even Jones was nowhere near.

It's not that I don't think the lad has talent, he does from what I've seen, but he's half way up a very steep learning curve.

This is partly the point I'm trying to make.
"We had bigger squads back then" - We didn't - We just haven't named our kids in this one.
The definition of the bigger squad of last year vs the thin squad of this year is only names on a computer screen when the kids don't play.

We had 24 outfield players named in our squad last season.
Ameobi, Fisher, and Browne never played a single minute or sat on the bench (I know two of those were injured).
Wood played 2 cup games, sat on the bench twice.
Malley played 1 game all season, sat on the bench twice.
Jack Robinson played one cup game, never sat on the bench.
Sivi sat on the bench four times, and was subbed on for 27 minutes once...
Akpom had a squad number, he played 19 minutes of football before being sent out on loan...

Without those kids (and akpom), that leaves our bigger 24 man squad, as a 16 man squad.

This year we have named 14 outfield players, if we sign Smith and 2 strikers.... 17 man squad.

If we can't cherry pick 2 or 3 youth players to play 1 or 2 cup games, or sit on the bench as emergency backup, in an entire season, we need to rethink our youth setup.

we did. We've got 14 senior pros. back in 2017 we had 24, that's excluding the kids on the fringe like Fry, Tav, and Pears.

I have no issue about the kids being involved in youth games, then maybe 1 or 2 becoming proper 1st team squad options. But this is different, they will be on the bench next week, 5 or 6 of them
