Video doorbells

I think it's creepy. I don't want to be recorded by someone's doorbell.

It's odd to think that if someone stuck a CCTV camera up in a town centre ten year ago all the George Orwell quotes would come out. Now people are sticking facial recognition doorbells on the front of our houses and liberty don't give a damn.

Just shows how much our opinions are not our own.
I wonder if all these posters with video door bells etc…have the appropriate notices up that individuals are being recorded and ask for consent to take images?

But it isn't a town centre, so nothing like 1984. No-one is sticking them on anyone else's houses. People are sticking them up on their own houses, probably because they got sick of being burgled or ripped off by couriers.
Doesn't matter a jot where it is. Was Orwell only writing about town centres? It's far worse now than when folk were moaning about CCTV as it includes facial recognition technology.

Didn't say Orwell wrote about town centres, you said people would be moaning about it 10 years ago in town centres in your last post. Cctv in public places and on properties is two very different things.

Obviously does matter a jot because people still complain about public cctv and there are strict rules about its positioning and purpose with each camera requiring specific levels of crime for example to be places there whereas private property you are entering that property.

Appropriate notices would be none because there are no appropriate notices for individuals recording their private property. You don't need consent to film people entering your property and you aren't governed by ICO, nor can people request footage from you.

It'd be a bit like writing to your neighbour to request their records about you under GDPR.

Only exceptions are cases where properties face each other and you're filming into peoples gardens or windows etc

Cameras are filming people from private property but the people they are filming may well be on public property.
I would say cameras on private property are a far greater infringement of liberties as they are not governed by rules and use far more invasive technology such as face recognition.

Personally I don't really care about being filmed. I think the interesting angle on this is how public opinion is shaped and how little we actually think for our selves.

You don’t need a sign to video your own property and you can set ring to only film when there is movement that infringes your property.

Invasive technology, you're on someone's home property and it only knows you if they've saved it as someone that has been there before 😂

Think it's odd too. Both neighbours have cameras about 13 feet high in their back gardens, clearly covering some of ours. Have spoken to them and say it's not recording our garden.

Also record sound, no privacy. They appear almost instantly we are out. Seems more than a coincidence. Have even commented they seen us in garden etc. Really strange. One even talks to his wife from work when she's in the garden through some speaker and his phone .

All become too much for me. Another reason to be glued to a phone too. Alerts for everything. My parents come round and sit and check phone every time theory door bell rings or it alerts someone withing 20 feet of their door. 🙄 Picking up what neighbours are saying etc.

Very strange. The 90s/early 00s was about the right balance for me. Some technology, computers etc, but social media and all these new gadgets that increase screen time are now a massive negative for me and I've backed off from all the social media and apps/tracking/camera device type stuff.

Feels much nicer living the simpler life, out in the garden, doing odd jobs around the house, sitting and talking, not "online" both physically and mentally.

Refusing to being drawn into it all. I sound like an old man 🤣

nowt wrong with living in the 'reals'. Getting shot of TV was the best thing I ever did. If I am in a hotel room I put it on and it spooks me, being forced to see adverts and that, listening to people tell me how I should think. Love the internet though as I have the choice with what/who I engage with. Currently it's fmttm and a BBC presenter.

Huw Edwards? Hope you're not on the crack.

Yeah I have never used the remote chat feature outside of messing with it with the kids or something, but I do like having a record of which delivery guy just drops something on the front door and leaves, often without even knocking let alone ringing

I had to order some foreign currency the other week (yes I know, how 1980s of me) .... It was due to be delivered special delivery ... company insisted they had a signature and photo of my door (not my door, wrong colour) ... had video evidence to prove they never came to my house ... eventually someone from several streets away (same number, totally different road) was kind enough to bring it over to us -- special delivery ffs.
I had the same thing happen with a passport. Passport office phoned me and said' we have the photo of it being delivered. do you have a blue door?' of course the answer was 'no'

But if you got burgled and their cameras helped with evidence to identify the criminal, would you not be glad that these new fangled technologies helped solve a crime?

Definitely. Shame they aren't just used for that. Even my own parents sit at my house watching a taxi pull up and listening to the neighbours conversation. Immoral to me.

How effective were burglar alarms? Was a kid when everyone had one so just assume they worked?

A camera that triggered and recorded upon breaking in/some sort of force being applied to the door would be a nice compromise for me.

I’ve had one since maybe 2015 but as many have suggested the delivery guys don’t use them so what’s the point? So last year I ditched my ring device and instead got a cheapo camera ($10) that just acts as a deterrent more anything else. Granted theft is theft but in the end if people want to invade your property then they’ll break in when you’re away. I think we’ve become so smitten by false advertising and perhaps security paranoia that we’ve become almost scared of our own selves.

I've seen people pretty much ruin their holidays by constantly watching the footage of people walking past their house.

Whatever floats your boat though I suppose.

Burglar alarms cctv and ring doorbells are all good but none of them deter intruders like a big dog.
