VAR Jimmy Hill 1982 World Cup

I think it was Monreal while at Arsenal who broke from his own half and was clear on goal only to be flagged offside when he wasn't. I've seen a few others (and mentioned them on the board once or twice...). Once the game stops VAR isn't used to check and then set everyone off from the same positions if the call is wrong. As such you end up with even fairly obvious offsides not being flagged.
Again the NFL has it right, play to the whistle not the flag.

The Line Judge spots a potential infringement & throws a flag, the play goes on to completion & then they discuss the infringement & call the play back or let it stand.

With offsides the lino could indicate the move needs to be reviewed but again let it run to completion.

At some point someone will be seriously injured when the game should have stopped.
How many injuries have been suffered after a ref has played advantage?

Advantage is a continuation of the game.

An offside is a stoppage.

And NFL is stop/start anyway. Much like rugby - there are far more natural pauses in the game.

VAR in football needs a complete rethink but it should be from scratch - not based on anything else directly. Obviously they need to look at what works well in other sports e.g. number of challenges etc.
