Valencia

Another thought is instead of Murcia compare Valencia with Cartagena. A bit further west than Murcia.

Look out for the Roman festival in Cartagena. It was a bit crazy.

Have been to Valencia many times its lovely and you have the option of Valencia and Levante games. ValenciaFlats is a great base, One and Two bedroom self catering apartments. 24 hour reception, comfortable and clean with a nice cafe/restaurant attached at which the food was remarkably good. valenciaflats

Going in a couple of weeks. Got tickets for Valencia v Athletic Madrid and just waiting for confirmation of Levante games. Plan on hiring bikes and riding up through the green belt and over to the new stadium

We loved Valencia, just a short visit from a cruise. We were dropped off at the old town which was a beautiful place to visit. While there I wondered why there were so many bridges but no river, just lovely parks, football pitches and play areas. I googled this and found there'd been at massive flood in the 50s so they diverted the river around the city.
Unfortunately there were massive floods again last year and the city is still affected by these. Most tourist places are back to normal but the locals are still coming to terms with the floods.

For some reason, I'd never really considered Valencia when thinking about European city breaks.

This thread has completely changed my mind! Just been looking into Valencia off the back of all these posts, and definitely going to go. Looks unreal!

If ypu go to Las Fallas try to catch the first night's bullfighting too. There is no stabbing of bulls nor even matadors. It's young athletes, male and female. jumping out of the way of bulls. It quite takes the breath away watching a young lady somersault over the attacking horns of an angry bull.

At the moment I have booked first night stay in Alicante and will then travel to Valencia early next morning. Still undecided about where to go next. Looked at Javea(Xabia), Murcia, Benidorm, but fancy Cartagena. Its a bit of a trek from Valencia(shortest journey I saw was around 4 hours) on local transport. Could drive but TBH don't want to do that prefer to use local transport. Is there any kind of a pass/ticket you can get to use various forms of transport for the period of my stay. I saw this site but not sure whether this just means their buses/journey. Any guidance much appreciated.

The train services are pretty good in Spain and generally cheaper than the uk. Although the earlier you buy the ticket the cheaper it is but you often have choices of slower and faster trains and prices vary accordingly and on some routes there are 'no frills' train operators. You might just want to get the app and buy tickets as you need them.

Renfe.com is the spanish train site. 'Abonos' are multi journey ticketsso look for any ticket with word 'bono' in You can use the site in english. I would also have a look at the 'The man from seat 61' website for advise on the spain pass.

Valencia has a metro tourist card for using the local metro and buses and you can pick up a 'tourist card' from the tourist office in the Plaza de Ayuntamiento, they are great with advice on options around the city and region.

I’m here now and would recommend it mate.
72 hour tram pass when you get off the plane €13.
Bicycles just over €3 per hour.
4 beers is about €15 most places if you avoid the Irish bars.
8 x 330ml cans of amstel which was pretty much opposite the turnstiles was €13.
Match tickets for Valencia v athletico £38.
Square and are around cathedral 😮
The green space through town is great.
I’d come back

Been there twice, both times for a gig.
Absolutely love the vibe.
Nothing better than sitting outside for tapas and a beer in the Autimn sunshine.

Just another vote. Valencia is brilliant, been a couple of times and it's got everything

We stayed in Gandia, a seaside town to the South, one time. Fantastic beaches
