USB Device Not Recognised Help

My Samsung A40 has suddenly stopped connecting to my PC I just keep getting the above message. I take photos with it so at the moment am having to bluetooth the images to another phone to be able to upload them to the PC

I've tried various trouble shooting methods that google brings up to no avail. Any quick fix suggestions on how I can get my phone to re-connect again?

One suggestion on google is to delete the corrupted USB registry entry but that sounds very technical!

when i've had it i've tried a different lead, or plugging lead into a different usb port and/or restarting both devices and trying again, or doing nothing and it's suddenly started working again for no apparent reason. never done anything drastic

Sometimes it depends what letter the drive is assigned. If it’s assigned as c,d,e,f etc, it might be conflicting. Try changing the drive letter to S or something.

this, most likely your lead is on the blink, or the port on your phone is full of cr6p.

got three cables same result with all three and tried to plug it into my works pc today .. wouldnt connect to that either

have you got one of them tiny brushes you get with an electric razor for cleaning the heads, if so give that a wiggle in the slot on your phone, or give it a blast with compressed air.

Might be best to turn the phone off before you stick anything in the slot...my brother stuck a paperclip end in to try that when the phone was switched on and got smoke off of it. Couldn't charge it up after that.

Sounds to me that when you're plugging it in it had changed its response to what happens as a default. Perhaps previously it has automatically detected that you want to transfer files but now it's not.

When you plug in your phone, go to the swipe down menu at the top of the phone and change the setting from charge only to transfer files.

I've linked an article here but he's a snippet :

"Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen, and you should see a notification about the current USB connection. At this point, it'll probably tell you your phone is connected only for charging.

Tap the notification and select "Transfer files" or "File transfer" in the menu that appears. If media files are all you're planning to move, you could also use the "Transfer photos" (sometimes listed as "PTP") option, which'll treat your phone like a digital camera. Once you've made your selection, go to your desktop and open up a File Explorer window"

Here's the article, hope it helps

It's definately the phone as I can plug my old Sony XA2 into the PC and it works fine

As soon as I try the Samsung A40 i just get ..

'the last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it'
'Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it your device may not be working properly'

So how do I get the device to work properly again without wiping everything off it :-(

Download the Samsung Kies software, it will include an updated USB driver for the Samsung device. Make sure you get the version correct for your phone.

The first diagnostic procedure to recover from an unresponsive state is to power cycle the device to clear the low level software. Initialise the configuration parameters and restore to a stable condition.

IN OTHER WORDS, TURN IT OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN.

Check device manager on your computer when the phone is plugged in. You may see an unrecognised device. Unplug the phone and see if it disappears to be sure. If it does, plug the phone back in and right click on the unrecognised device when it appears. It should give an option to uninstall it or forget the device. Once that’s completed, unplug the phone and power all devices off and on again. Then plug the phone back in and see if it’s recognised and installed properly.
