Unexplained bruising on legs

For a while now I've noticed bruises on my legs. I've thought nothing of it, believing I may have knocked into something and just forgotten.

I was having a shower this morning however and noticed a large bruise has appeared down the side of my left thigh.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is it just something which can occur as you get older?

Ring 111 and have a chat with a medic, there are few possible causes including diabetes, so get it checked and the person you speak to on 111 will direct you to a GP if you need to see one. Alternatively get an appointment to see your GP it is still possible even during the pandemic though you will find that you may have to jump through a few hoops first and that the arrangements at the surgery will be different.

In short get some expert advice.

A few years ago a similar thing happened to me. Started as a bruise but turned darker and spread down my leg and looked really serious. Eventually had it fully checked out and turned out to be internal bleeding. The doctor said I had probably banged my leg, without possibly even realising it, but was very common and nothing to worry about and thankfully eventually went. Definitely worth getting it checked out though, probably nothing serious.

Apologies for the silly remark upthread. I get unexplained bruises all of the time but they don't really bother me. I just figure that I'm getting old and clumsy and forgetful and I probably DID walk in to that doorframe but I just don't remember doing it or didn't feel it at the time. I ended up with a huge burn on my leg last year from sitting too close to a heater and I honestly didn't feel a thing. Only noticed it the next morning because there was a massive blister on my leg. Still got the scar from that one.

Crikey. This thread coincides with a similar situation I am in.

Any unexplained bruising over time, should always first get this checked through GP and appropriate blood tests run, don't ignore it. Hopefully, nothing much to worry about but at the same time, avoid googling any symptom - it can be the worst thing you can do :ROFLMAO: ... you could google a common cold and be told you've got three weeks to live!

Just go through your GP ASAP, get the appropriate tests ran, and better to nip it in bud while you can in case it could be anything that needs further looking into.

On my father's side of the family, there's a long line of iron disorder haemochromatosis (sp!) and unexplained bruising, skin discolouration/irritation etc in general can be a sign of all kinds of deficiencies, such as the one, in particular, I am speaking of. In my particular case, I have two brothers to my father's side and there is something like a 50% chance of one of us inheriting the condition. He is in quite late stages of development and has a lot of treatment now as a result.

I recently had my blood done and the GP is aware of the history on my father's side, as I have had symptoms for some time now along with other issues I am dealing with, which indicate possible excessive iron within the blood (I'm no expert obviously but have been feeling odd for a while now and bruising has occurred where I cannot explain, along with other irritable conditions in general.)

I have also had a chronic migraine that occurs at least once weekly, to the point of vomiting the pain gets so bad This is what finally got my **** back to the doctor instead of just hoping it goes away like an idiot 🤡 ... Other things like brain fog, pain under the ribcage has been present. Also, chronic depression worsening, though I have suffered this since my early teens. These are all linked to haemochromatosis, apparently.

OP, do you have any other symptoms you've noticed that have coincided with the bruising. Fatigue?? Joint pain, itching?? Skin rashes?

Any bruising that lasts a couple of weeks or longer and re-occurring certainly needs checking out, anyway. It can be a sign of all sorts, auto-immune disorders etc. But hopefully nothing too alarming.

It only just occurred to me the other day, I'm 35, I'm no longer in my early 20s and should actually start looking after myself :ROFLMAO: ... I am not a heavy drinker and of general good health, normal weight etc .. In fact, I haven't touched a drop for nearly six years, I believe!

Anyway, I had a voicemail from my doctor's receptionist earlier this afternoon saying I have to return to the surgery following my initial blood work being done a few days back .. "nothing to worry about!" ... yeah, thanks, Love. That normally means there is.

Whatever it is the OP is concerned about though, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just make sure you keep on top of it and get it checked out.

I have a few friends who are taking blood thinners and get terrible skin discolouration/bruising in their calves etc. Though many of them are quite overweight too, whether that is something that is related I have no idea.

Be well OP

Erythema Nodosum maybe??
I had it when I was a kid.
