Unai Emery insists Cameron Archer's successful loan spell at Middlesbrough is "very good" for Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old has had a direct hand in 15 goals in 17 Championship appearances for Boro and has helped Michael Carrick's side all but book their place in the play-offs this season. Archer joined Boro on loan back in January and has netted nine goals in his last 13 games, after spending the first half of the season in Villa's first-team.

Former head coach Steven Gerrard chose to keep the centre-forward in his squad for the Premier League season after catching the eye in pre-season, but Archer only made six appearances off the bench before the break for the World Cup. Emery then allowed Archer to depart on loan in January, while Danny Ings was later sold to West Ham for £15million and Jhon Duran joined from MLS side Chicago Fire.

"The plan was to play in the Championship every week, or three matches a week," Emery told BirminghamLive. In the Championship they play a lot of matches and get experience and get minutes and try to expose him with his best performances.

"This is very good for him, very good for us as well as a club, and at the end of the season of course we are going to decide (what happens next).*

"As well, all the players that are out on loan. It is not only him, (Aaron) Ramsey as well is playing very well, Tim (Iroegbunam), he is playing very well as well.

"There are other players out on loan that we have been following and we have analysed each one and take decisions for the next months."

Archer's teammate at Boro, Aaron Ramsey, was on loan at Norwich City earlier in the season with Dean Smith, but returned to Villa following a knee injury. Ramsey has been in top form under Carrick in the second half of the campaign, and has chipped in with six goal involvements in his last eight games.

* Does that mean a decision has not been made, so therefore, his future is up for negotiation - with Boro for instance?

Its a bit of a non article really isn't it? As you say just implies no decision about next year has been made.

otherwise its "young player goes out on loan to play matches". Not sure that really constitutes a "plan". Its hardly Oceans 11 is it!

Whatever happens, I hope we manage to secure his services for at least another season, either on loan or purchase. That stat of having a hand in 15 goals in 17 matches is crazy! If he’d been here for the whole season, I’ve no doubts he’d have been hitting 20 goals. Imagine that - 2 forwards scoring 20+ goals in one season 😍

There is a lot of separation of the player from the club in those comments, like they are treating Archer as a commodity rather than a human. May not actually be like that in practise of course.

I was talking to a Plymouth Argyle fan the other day. He said 'looking forward to promotion, yes. But our main goalscorer will be going back to Villa...'

Both players have been a cracking bit of business for villa..
yes we’ve benefited from their form but villa should be in a perfect position to maximise their money from the pair or get 2 good players full of experience and enjoying them selves back in the squad…
The way it goes will depend on whether villa chose to buy a couple of big names and if the pair are willing to wait their turn..
I’m sure we’d take them no problem but only at the right price…

Villas upturn in form and potentially earning a Euro spot could be bad news for us keeping them.

WIth the added games and hectic schedule of Thursday/Sunday football they'll be kept in the squad I should think .

They were ready to sell the pair of them.. the thing that is good for Villa is that can now sell them for more money.. probably £16m yor the pair. Very good business

Perhaps, although I think the opposite may be true, in that they’ll be looking to add quality to the squad to build on the relative success, and both players may be squeezed further down the pecking order.

But Archer/Ramsey have home grown status for European squad quotas. And ramsey will be u21 at start of the season which means he is a "freebie" for squad registration purposes.

Aston Villa are in a position in which Emery prefers to play 1 striker. That 1 striker is Watkins who is miles ahead of Archer, and if they do get into Europe next season (which looks very likely), they'll probably want to bolster that attack.

I don't think Archer is in Emery's plans. Aston Villa are very good at the moment and to give Archer minutes would be a risk.

I hope I'm right and he's available next season - either to buy or on loan again.

However, if we were to get him back next season, we would need to be in the PL. There's no way he's dropping down a division again as he's far too good for this league.

Whether Archer and Ramsey are in in Aston Villa’s future playing plans it is only common sense in his club’s interest for Emery to get the highest transfer fees possible.
If this happens then it will be up to Carrick and Gibson to decide whether paying these transfer fees is in Boro’s interest if we get promoted or not.

How many good seasons did Patrick Bamford have and he came to us for £5.5m we sold him to Leeds for £7m
Poor comparison. Paddy had 3 failed loans where he didnt score in the prem after his excellent season on loan with us in the championship.

Archers transfer fee will be based on potential to succeed in the prem having not really played in there, which will be considerably higher. Look at Spence/Tav. Both went for more than 8 million. And that's before you pay the Striker premium for Archer.

If we do go up and Archer becomes available for us to buy then I hope we do. I am sure lots of clubs will be interested though and this is where Djed Spence could do us a big favour.

We can use Djed to remind Archer that signing for a club where you have been a real success and where fans and manager think you are great is a good career plan or you can end up on loan in France.

I personally think this is great news for us, they will no doubt bring in a fair few players in the summer and especially if they qualify for Europe. I have no doubt they will bring in another striker and I don't see Archer or Ramsey getting much game time in the premier league with Villa. Also Archer and Ramsey have very little premier league experience so is Emry going to want to take that chance on them both, I don't think he will. I think another season at Boro regardless of which league we are in will be best for business for both teams.

What did Tav go for? £10m plus £2.5m? Thats my guide on value for Archer.

Ramsey is a bit younger and less developed, so harder to price.

Archer and Ramsey are benefitting for playing in an attacking team. In a Pulis or Karanka team they would not be getting the same stats.
