Ukraine - invasion underway

Russia's nuclear playbook allows for the use of tactical nukes.

Basically the invasion is not going to plan and he is raising the spector of nuclear attack to try and intimidate Ukraine and the West.

If Russia fail in this invasion then Putin will be a lame duck with Russia and his legacy left in humiliation, he's a mad man who will do anything to prevent his power being evaporated.

Very worrying times.
The thing that has to be factored in is that he 70, he hasn't got long left in power, he has made a lot of enemies over the years, and once the money starts to dry up and soldiers come back in body bags he will make far more. Once the threat of retaliatory nuclear strikes start to sink in, he will make even more enemies from those people in his inner circle who want their children and grandchildren to have a future.

His statement wreaks of desperation, bullying and is a form of international terrorism. No one is threatening his nations land, no one is forcing his countries future of self determination....no one but him.

It baffles me how Putin expects Ukraine to be governed once he's replaced the current government with his own puppets. Wrecking the capital city and killing a fair chunk of its residents isn't going to win many hearts and minds.

If his new President manages to avoid being assassinated they'll have to keep 40 million irrate Ukrainians in check who'll have plenty of weapons, it'll be like Afghanistan on steroids. Putin will need to keep his entire army there permanently to do this, so it's going to be a severe burden on an already crippled Russian economy and will cost countless Russian lives.

This isn't what he expected and I'd be looking for a quick way out of this if I were him, without losing face. I hope for everyone's sake that one can be found.

Word from a friend with military intel is that "Kantemirovskaya pulled out of Obolon and Kyiv Massif tonight. They fought well, betrayed by Putin. The remnants of Tamanskaya crossed the border back to Russia during the night. Nobody is ordering them back, Kremlin is silent, fearing their return." And also "The Russian airforce evaporated more or less. They have no night fighting capabilities, so did not find life to funny with Eurofighters ambling about "volunteering" with hastily painted Ukrainian flags".

The ommander of the Kantemirovskaya division had been ordered to stay put and wait for supplies and re-inforcements (a week away). Apparently he repeatedly used the phrase "Putin can go **** himself to death". Which is about as offensive as you can get in Russian I believe.

thouhht the EU had given the Ukranian airforce old Polish mig-29s as Ukrainian pilots already know how to fly them?

Not sure if that's what they've given them, but it's what they've asked for - and for that exact reason. According to the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Borrell said that Mr. Kuleba had requested planes that Ukrainian Air Force pilots can fly. Ukraine's jet fighters are Soviet-built MiG and Sukhoi models.

I understand the eurofighters are flown by other nations. The Swedes allowed for their military personnel to go to the Ukraine and fight yesterday. Some are already there (they don't care for Putin much as Russian the Russian navy has been making threatenning approaches to Gotaland).

Even if pilots who know how to fly them go to voulnteer in Ukraine, where are they going to get the Eurofighters from?

Their home country air forces aren't exactly going to let them take the planes with them.

The Swedish governement gave their armed forces permission to volunteer with Swedish military hardware. Not sure if that's where Eurofighters came from but that did happen.
Apparently "General Kisel of the 1st Tank Army has stated that he will personally strangle Putin". This coming from someone on active duty with live intel from Radio comms.

The Chinese have, apparently, kicked Russia off SWIFT their end.

Talking of China, I think they're quite an important element being overlooked. I would be surprised if there aren't some major discussions going on between them and Russia behind the scenes. I can't see China wanting the world to go up in flames because of the actions of one unhinged loony with a small penis.

exactly this. China might want to have an economy to dwarf every other....but they don't want it purely because they have the least nuked country.

Just had a message from my colleagues in Kyiv who said they are working under ‘force majeure’ and ‘need to run to the bomb shelter 5-9 times a day’, and then in the next sentence said they are still working as much as they can… as I’ve said previously I just couldn’t imagine thinking about work when such awful things are going on. Heartbreaking to read the full email.

There's talk of China and Russia creating an alternative to the SWIFT system so I wouldn't hold your breath.

I'm not sure where you're getting this idea about there being Eurofighters in the Ukraine - I can't find reliable source that says that.

Incidentally, Sweden doesn't have any Eurofighters - they were not part of the project.

And while the Swedes are saying they'll send military equipment and the Danes are saying they'll allow volunteers, I also can't find anything saying the Swedes are allowing volunteers to go to Ukraine, taking military hardware with them.

Do you have any reliable sources to back up what you're saying?

Direct from a staff commander. Not guaranteeing veracity, just relaying what he tells me. He has info that isn't appearing in regular news sources, including twitter.

This actually makes sense to me, and something I had been thinking about this weekend as I seem to remember hearing about this being rumoured. Its hard to imagine Putin has got things so catastrophically wrong, as it appears at the moment.
