Ukraine - invasion underway

I hope you're right.
Putin knows nato is powerless so he can have his proxy way as we saw with Crimea with little military threat. But as I say if he did step foot in Poland Estonia etc then it’s the usaf the raf the us tanks etc that’s what is awaiting him. And that’s a hugely different proposition and he knows it b

This is the thing that concerns me, does he start issuing ultimatums about taking back all the old soviet stakes.
No, they're NATO countries.

What sanctions did Russia use when we invaded Iraq, or when we (the West) turned up in Yugoslavia?

This will end very soon. Lots of hot air being blown at the moment.

Seriously, how can it go further?

He doesn’t have the economic or military might, or domestic support to push deep into Europe, let alone be able to hold vast swathes of land. It’s just not possible, there’ll be bluster and he’ll use other forms of ‘warfare’ but unless he’s become reckless with his own survival or there’s an aggressive move against him, he’ll not take this further than Ukraine, and maybe other countries that don’t have a robust defence.

Edit: I’m conveniently forgetting about nuclear and wmd warfare here.
I think this is pretty fair. The nuclear option is the ultimate insanity and if he wants to go down in history there needs to be a world left for it to be recorded in.

Personally I think he’ll go into Kyiv and target the govt and effectively cut off the head of the Ukraine infrastructure thus debilitating their attack.

A little worrying.... I know it's the Daily Crap - but still

‘If Russia puts a bootstep into Nato territory we're ALL at war': Retired General warns Britain's 'children and grandchildren' will be called to fight if Putin advances across Europe

We are this is no fear mongering that is NATO article 5

an attack on one is an attack on all it’s that simple.

I think a lot of the West are assuming that Putin is a rational and sane man, if this is him trying to write his name in the history books who knows how it ends.
I think Putin has played the long game. He ensured that Europe became heavily reliant on Russian low cost energy, with the money flowing back in, he built up a stock pile of weaponry. He has carefully and studiously undermined democracy funding through the back door political causes such as brexit to name but one. Anything that causes instability in western alliances helps his cause. The tories are his best chance to see the UK split up, supporting nationalistic causes divides and makes it easier for him to manipulate or conquer whenever the time is right.

He ‘persuaded‘ governing bodies to hold major events like the Olympics, World Cup and got Sochi added to the F1 circuits. Countries in Western Europe have been lulled into thinking he was someone they could work with and trade as a reasonable leader. Once he had countries hooked he has now begun to put his foot down and reveal his true self, the power mad dictator that has so many countries reliant on his precious once cheap resources. In holding back supplies as we came out of the pandemic he has ensured the rise in prices due to demand and increase short term wealth. Countries like Germany, Poland, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and many more heavily rely on Russian gas & oil. He has weaponised this to his benefit and could now try to hurt these countries one by one economically and divide and conquer. The west has had its eye off the Russian bear for too long If he can break some of these countries resolve, through resource supply, he splits NATO alliances in the process Imho.

From NATO’s own website.

Article 5

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security .

This is going to hurt. The gas price has rocketed 30% so we should expect to see the energy cap go up by 50% towards the end of the year. Boris' £200 loan has backfired, we'll have to pay that back on top. Oil rocketed up etc etc

Maybe we need to deescalate this. Putin will take Ukraine, I think that's a given. Maybe we then need to sanction the Oligarchs and kick them all out. Get rid of golden visas. But then attempt to stabilise the situation so Joe Public isn't lumbered with mega cost of living increases?

he’s not a politician he’s a military operator.

I'm starting to get that feeling too. Especially after watching a video on liveleaks showing what looked like a dog fight between Russian and Ukrainian jets. Also another video of Russian helicopters attacking an airport.

I thought liveleak was shut down?
