UK Timber shortage

Quite a lot of our timber comes from USA and the USA is the biggest user, if they can't get it in their own country they will import it in, creating shortages in the world market including European markets.

An example of USA exports to the UK is DRAX power station. I beleive its still the biggest power station in Europe but its been converted to wood chips from coal. The wood chips nearly all come from timber grown in the USA - I think North Carolina mainly. Drax has a long term contract for severla forests over there. I saw a news story about it 12 months back. Possibly the quality of the North American timber is better than the conifers from Scandinavia.

We should grow more timber in this country as we have the right climate for many trees. I guess our land is better used for other higher value uses.
I posted a link to show just how much of our wood came from the EU. So saying a lot comes from the US is simply false.
Of course we should grow more timber in this country. However that doesn’t really cover us for the next 20 years does it?

You still haven’t told us all what you need the wood for!

Ref Driver shortage - there has been no driving tests of Lorry drivers for 17 months, in the UK. Quite a few have retired and there are no new ones. Its probably true in many countries, plus self-isolation, staying at home looking after the kids etc

If timber and driver shortages are caused by Brexit, is Brexit causing the electronic chip shortages in the UK too? And I better add Cement now.

I do think Brexit will reduce the supply of young people working in hospitality, but it was happening before Brexit. Young people will only come here if the disposable incomes are significantly higher than in their own country and possibly a chance to improve their English which can be an asset if they return to their home country and go in live in the USA.

Covid has also had an impact on people leaving the UK. Some people have left to be close to their extended families and have not returned.

Sorry to say UK employers will have train more staff and pay them more and basically make the job more attractive. It will be a wake up call for some employers who are used to poaching staff, treating staff poorly or paying the minimum legal amounts and even resenting that. While paying their CEOs multi million pound salaries.
It is definitely a big contributing factor to the driver shortages, given how many were eastern European who returned home after we become hostile to foreigners. COVID and the testing situation has exacerbated the problem. I also think, although don't know, that timber shortages (Which are worldwide) haven't been helped by the fact that we import 80% of our timber and the majority of that from the EU. I presume it's been more difficult to get hold of that timber for us.

So here's the thing: And the main problem we have. Some people will make excuses for Breixt: Oh it's the COVIDS, oh it's the worldwide issue. This is the problem we have in this country. I'm sure you can see that brexit is making these problems worse. We have a HGV driver shortage, and we've made it hostile for thousands of our HGV drivers so they've just gone home. This is the issue I have. I'll keep banging this drum no matter how unpleasant you find it or how much it gets reported. Brexit is a contributing factor in all these things. You can deal in absolutes and blame x and y to avoid admitting you made a mistake with brexit but the pure fact is it makes problems which already would have existed much worse. This is the depressing thing about these conversations. It's the reason I get annoyed. Because there is no give at all from side brexit. Every single issue (and there are many) gets batted away and blamed on something else. I'm certain, because you seem an intelligent man, that you're aware the Brexit contributes to these issues. However because you know other things are also causing them you just bring them up. You can't even acknowledge that : a - making it difficult for people to do a job might mean less people doing that job and b - Introducing more trading obstacles such as tariffs and paperwork to a market where we get the majority of a certain commodity would help lead to a shortage of that commodity. This is the depressing thing. There is no hallway house with a brextiteer, no intelligent debate. Only IT CAN'T BE BREXIT BECAUSE....

Smalltown - Why do you worry so much about the things you can’t control.

I would say the majority of Brexiteers realise they have made a pigs ear of it, but it’s happened, things are sh1t, but move on. This is not good for your health.

Why worry about wood you don’t even need?

Over a million Polish people alone opted for pre-settled status to stay in this country. Next....

Regardless of the rights or wrongs of your posts, what are you trying to achieve on here? Even if you convince a handful of posters that brexit has caused more problems than they realised, then what? Are you trying to mobilise a small band of revolutionaries, like Citizen Smith?

I honestly don't see the point of constantly trying to prove your stance that brexit was bad.
Surely there are other platforms for your message that would be more appropriate and effective.

It's a message board for a free and open discussion. It's not a "stance" that breast was bad anymore. It's a self evident fact. I can't get my mind into the heads of those who want to ignore this now, and blame something else. When it's making us all poorer. When it's weakening our country. Help me out here: why do Brexiters hate britain? why are they happy for her to fail?

The point is brexit is a negative factor in all these things because we have replaced a working expediant import/export system with a solution that is infinitely worse. Is brexit the cause of all our ills? NO Is it an influencing negative factor? ABSOLUTEY

With regards to labour shortages, we are missing a trick by trying to turn back the migrants travelling across the Channel. Why not receive them warmly, house them, train them and put them into the workplace where we need them?

I guess the receive them warmly part is the biggest hurdle to overcome for many in this country!

Any facts to support this? A- that they left, B- that they were E European and C- that it was because we are 'hostile to foreigners'?
Yeah I meontuoend the company that had done the research in my food shortages thread.

But yeah, you crack on. If you can't even begin to acknowledge the Brexit might have affected on industry where a lot of the workers are EU nationals you keep arguing against it. You're exactly the people I'm talking about bringing this country down You can't even begin to acknowledge the problems of brexit. Why is that? Embarrassed you were duped? Can't admit you made a mistake? Or maybe you enjoy this country being hostile to foreigners and isolated form it's near neighbours? I can't think why but it takes all sorts I guess

This is the struggle isn't it? The Brexiteers can't even acknowledge that. Can't even begin to discuss things rationally. I wonder why ?

This is the problem the Brexit bigots have. Migrants coming into this country are simultaneously scrougning off the state and stealing our jobs!
