Ugo

Loved Ugo. He doesn't seem to get mentioned much when people talk about Boro legends but he was outstanding in his prime. For all the good central defenders we've had over the years I would go for Southgate and Ugo every time in my all time line up (started going in '86). They complemented each other perfectly.

When we signed Ugo, to play alongside Southgate I just couldn't believe it, here were 2 of the best CB's in the modern game at the time & we'd signed them both
Ugo was a mountain, didn't he score one of his goals against Villa, I know he scored against us when playing for Villa in 97
Your right when thinking of Boro legends he just sits under the radar, but that last minute block in the Carling Cup final to enable us to win our only trophy, well apart from the ASC

Yeah he scored a header at home to Villa,. Just regarding your first line erimus, we signed Ugo first when Robbo was still there, but that doesn't detract from the point.

Of course we did wikos, thanks for pointing that out, strange how I thought the other way round 👍

Southgate and ehiogu were the perfect partnership. Southgate the organiser as cool and collected a player as he is now as England manager, ugo doing the dirty work getting in harm's way to put the blocks in. If it wasn't for those two we would have been scrapping around the relegation places in mclarens first season or two. We also plundered villa for boateng who was also a vital part of the team.

Sheriff, good summary. On top of the qualities mentioned though Southgate was also very tough despite his class, and Ugo was a composed defender as well as being so physical

I have to agree - best central defensive partnership in my time. Some games they just didn´t give the opposition a sniff. I remember Bernie saying on Century after the match that they had the cigars out. And he was right.

Ugo was fantastic in the other box as well when we had a corner. Nothing got in his way when he went for the ball. His goal at home to Villa was a fantastic header.
