One of our cup winning heroes - a rock at the back, a tower coming forward. England international team mate of Gareth Southgate -a pairing to compare with Boam and Maddren, Mowbray and Pallister.
And a top, top bloke taken long before his time.

Loved Ugo, he was absolutely immense in both boxes. He wasn't just a physical player though, his reading of the game, like Gareth's, was superb and rarely looked out of control.
Unbelievable now to think that we had a partnership of that quality.
I don't think we were Ugo's preferred destination but he certainly put a shift in for us.

Won more here than he would have at Villa.

What about Pallister and Mowbray?
They played in the third division, then second division and got relegated from their only season together in the top flight.
Pallister was a very good player when he left and went on to be a great player at Man Utd in some great partnerships.
Mowbray was not a particularly good player and their partnership doesn't compare.
People get dewy eyed about the 86-88 side for understandable reasons, but Boam & Maddren, Southgate and Ehiogu did it for longer together at a higher level and played for England too.

I can't add anything more than has already been said but to say that Ugo was a giant of a man on the pitch, and a true gentleman off it.

Great player and a big part of the greatest day of my Boro life, if the measure of a man on the pitch makes him a giant his personality, his constant smile and truly fantastic character off the pitch dwarf even that.

RIP Ugo
