TV licence fee rise

Because it's not optional. I might want to watch Live TV that has nothing to do with the BBC but I'm forced to pay for BBC to do so. And it's a criminal offence to not have one when you are supposed to have one.

Just the wording of it proves how bonkers it is. It's a TV license. It's 2023, why do I need a license to be able to watch TV. It's archaic and it should be optional based on whether or not you consume BBC services.
It is entirely optional. You've just made a decision you'd rather watch what live TV offers. In that case pay up. If you don't think it's worth it don't pay

So to watch any live tv you have to pay a license fee, even though most of the channels are commercial. It’s an outdated system, it’s laughable that it’s criminal offence to not own a license when watching a commercial channel.
There is no choice to opt out of BBC alone, it’s all included in one envelope.

if I only watched Netflix on my tv how would I prove I don’t watch live tv?
It’s almost impossible to do that.

They give you a choice to opt out yet it’s almost impossible to do so, and a lot of hassle. Therefore it’s easier just to pay, and that’s the model they use.

I'll start by saying I'm in favour of the licence fee and think it's excellent VFM.

That said, I hadn't realised the full extent of the requirements for the licence. Let me get this straight, if I'm watching YouTube videos through a smart TV I'd need a licence? That does seem pretty bonkers.

Only if they're live YouTube streams.

If you're just watching old videos of Boro v Bolton at Cardiff, then it's fine.

It's worth it just to be able to listen to a football commentary without them stopping to tell you the betting odds every 10 minutes.

Yes, if you don't think it's worth it don't pay. I'm baffled at what the issue is, it's 2023 there's plenty of souces of entertainment out there if you can't bring yourself to pay £169

When you have to pay an extra £50 each month to watch anything half decent through other subscription services, it’s not exactly fair if you never use the bbc

I appreciate that it’s not straightforward, but the commercial channels are owned by the commercial arm and are not funded by the licence fee.

If you’ve no interest in watching BBC1-4, or live TV on the other channels, you don’t need a licence and should opt out. I’m a believer in the licence fee but I’m an even bigger believer in people not paying if they’re not using the services a licence requires.

If you're not happy with the licence fee go without it. Use subscription instead for 3 or 4 times more to watch inferior television. Oh, and give the Boro more money to listen to commentaries.

There’s a long-believed fallacy that if ITV/Channel 4 came out of the licence fee people would be able to continue watching them for free.

It’s wrong, at least long term. We are moving quickly towards a fully digital world. If you’ve ever used ITV and C4’s OTT services you’ll see how already battered to hell they are with adverts, that will all get cranked up to 11, you’ve already got to pay to remove the adverts to the tune of £5/month, if they all do that, your £169/year will soon be gone and guess what? You’ll still be watching adverts if you watch the tiny amount of live content they’ll still provide.

People really struggle to understand how losing a public service will affect the market. Sure, you may be given more “choices” on the surface, initially, but the vast majority of people will end up significantly worse off financially, and the rest will end up watching non-stop propaganda for the super rich.

If you don’t have a sky box, virgin box or any sort of satellite/aerial plugged in then they can’t prove you watch live tv.

Definitely need an opt out option. I'd opt out in a flash.

I'd rather put the £12 odd a month towards a streaming service. The last thing I actually watched on the BBC was line of duty. I hardly watch any terrestrial TV.

Don't mention iplayer and radio etc. Also don't use either. So why should I pay it? You don't watch Disney / amazon you simply don't subscribe. I'm not sure why bbc should be any different. Why should anyone pay for something they don't use?
Exactly my thoughts regarding council tax, which is far far higher than the licence fee. Licence fee is hundred quid and I get TV for a year. Far better than the garbage on Amazon Disney and apple TV. Council tax couple of hundred quid a month for them to come and empty the bins.
