Turner Classic Movies (TCM) end of an era

I received an email from Virgin Media today stating that the TCM movie channel is closing down early next month. How will I get my fix of John Wayne movies and what will I watch every month instead of Rio Bravo?

All joking aside, I watch this channel regularly and have seen some old classics over the years. A lot of the movies are moving over to the Free to Air channel Quest but it does seem that TCM are in struggling globally. I hope they can pull through.

I've had Virgin for 20 years and I've never watched TCM in all that time. And I'm quite old

So no surprise to me really

There's very rarely anything on any of the other movie channels Virgin offer and TCM is my go to channel when I need an uplift. You can't beat an old black & white or a good cowboy film.

Fair play but obviously you're not Virgin's target audience at the moment. I love catching stuff like How the West was Won (for the 7th or 8th time!) but I wouldn't go searching for stuff like that
Anyway, I agree it's a shame niche channels like TCM are disappearing, but it's all about the cash. It may come back on some other media channel, but you'll probably have to pay [On another note I've just cancelled my Paramount & Disney subs,as there's little on them and I think Netflix will go soon]

Sorry, I think you have missed the gist of my opening post, Virgin isn't stopping the channel, the channel is stopping itself due to issues they are having in America. TCM's library of films is going to be made available on Freeview channel Quest.

Regarding not being Virgin's targeted audience, I sometimes question why I have the TV side of it and then there will be days like today when I haven't moved away from watching the Ashes or some other sporting event. The rest of it is crap and the channels you mentioned are no better. I only stick with Netflix due to it being included in the Virgin package, I certainly wouldn't pay for it.

Ah right, Soz.
Yeah I keep questioning myself about why I keep Virgin TV. I don't watch more than anything on Freeview. Their internet is just far superior to anything else round here, so TV just ends up being affordable.

And I have just bought myself in to an 18 month contract that boosted my mps and gave me Sky Sports for an extra 3 quid a month. I'm a mug but hoping for plenty of live Boro games next season as we storm the league :)

And that is how they've got us all. Mine runs out in October so will need to contact them in September to go through the 'I'm cancelling' routine until I get what I want. We need decent wifi due to the wife working from home.

The trouble with TCM is that you can’t get subtitles. I have good hearing but always prefer watching films with subtitles nowadays. (y)

You might be pleasantly surprised. I did mine a couple of weeks ago through the online chat and got the same package plus sports in uhd for £20 less than I was paying without once having to threaten to leave.

record all their oldies asap lol :) comes in quite handy during late sleepless nights
Unfortunately i'm sure as soon as they pull the channel, you can't watch anything recorded (though it stays in your planner until you delete it yourself). Happened to me on a few channels now, especially Forces TV which was a brilliant channel

Talking Pictures is an interesting little channel - with lesser known but still watcheable films and TV from 1960s, 70s and early 80s. The guy who runs its rescued a lot of video/film tapes from skips at TV/Film studios.

FilmFour still has some good slightly off centre films like Black47 last night.
