Trial Road Closure Acklam/Tollesby

A MIDDLESBROUGH road is to be closed in a bid to reduce speeds and the amount of traffic on the route.

The trial closure at the junction of Church Lane and St Mary's Walk in Acklam follows long-standing concerns over traffic levels, speeding and road safety on the ‘access only' road.

Speeds have been recorded well in excess of the 20mph limit and a cyclist was seriously injured near the closure point.

The move follows public consultation, with the experimental measure due to come into force from Monday, October 26.

While residents were split 50/50 for and against the closure, those most directly affected on Church Lane and St Mary's Walk were 81% and 79% in favour respectively.

Councillor Ashley Waters, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, has therefore given the go-ahead for the trial road closure option.

The impact of the closure on traffic - and comments from local residents - will be monitored for between six and 18 months, before a decision is taken on whether the closure should be permanent.

Residents have been informed and road signs will be installed to make motorists aware of the changes.

Councillor Waters said: "The safety of pedestrians and road users is of paramount importance, and the amount of traffic in this area has become a real issue for local people.

"This trial closure is a sensible approach in an effort to address the problem and encourage people to use more suitable traffic routes."

  • The closure will come into force from Monday, October 26, during school half term week.

closing the road will definitely reduce speed and the amount of traffic. Never fails.

Ha ha what it means is that it stops being a short cut through-route. It will be like Gypsy Lane or The Grove in Marton, divided into two roads and so you lose all that traffic that races along cutting a big corner.

They are closing this section of road because 80 residents out of 264 who were sent a letter complained about abuse of access only only status and speeding on St Marys and Church Lane.

It is used as a short cut route but all that will happen now is that people who took the short cut down St Marys Walk to Church Lane onto Acklam Road will now just short cut through Ridley & Hatfield Avenues instead. Both roads that are narrower than St Marys and Church Lane and already suffer the same abuse of people ignoring the access only signs, who drive way above the speed limit and because the roads are narrower/more congested invariably drive on the pavement.

So now a whole load more people will be inconvenienced/put at a risk to appease 80 people who seemingly hadn't complained about anything anyway but responded to a letter seemingly sent out at random.

There is nothing remotely funny about this.

As said above, they will only move the problem to other roads. And I bet a lot of the people who live round that area speed as well. There's a corner at the top of St Mary's walk. The people who live there are always complaining that they can't reverse their cars out onto the road..

There will be more turning right at the library to miss out the lights on Acklam Road / Green Lane or the other way, left at Hatfield Avenue!

They will now you've told them which way to go :D

People don't need telling Buttermere Ave, Hatfield Ave, Ridley Ave and adjacent roads are plagued by people using them to take short cuts and avoid the lights at the junction of Green Lane/Acklam Road.

The reasons given for the road closure on St Marys/Church Lane taking place are the same issues suffered by the residents of the above named roads and this road closure will only make things worse.

More drivers ignoring Access only signs, speeding, driving on pavements, increased noise, increased pollution that's what the rest of us have to look forward to.
