Train station at the Riverside?

"Teesside Metro".
You`re looking twenty years ahead and there`s more chance of Ben Houchen running naked through the Cleveland Centre, than a metro. (n)
Yep!! No chance.

It's been discussed on here a few times but all sorts of options were looked at in the days of TDC. Instead they installed a few "white elephants" instead.

NB:
Road access to the Riverside was a major priority when designed and built.
Access to public transport wasnt.

The nearest bus stop is on Borough Road, just before it crosses the A66 and its feeder slip roads.
Distance is just under a mile.
There are three major road crossings before joining Shepherdson Way.
Its not easy to navigate if anyone has any vulnerabilities, not just ambulatory aids.
The bus stops are served by the 64A Arriva bus - which runs every 20 minutes.
So if you travel from Redcar, Dormanstown or Eston Square [or from Middlesbrough Bus Station - reverse] thats OK.
The question is: how long will it take for those buses [with a capacity of 60] to transport all those fans from and to the ground?
Public transport to and from the ground is not fit for purpose [none-existant].

I’ve never got it so I could be completely wrong but isn’t there a bus stop at Pizza Hut which is more like half a mile walk?

Can’t believe there isn’t a regular service to middlehaven on a match day

Agree and they need more bus lanes dedicated bus ways so that buses don't get stuck with regular traffic. I would get the bus to and from the match if it was quick and easy. At the moment you'd just be stuck in traffic so I may as well sit in a comfy car.

There is.
The subway under the A66 is littered with glass and muck, with poles squeezing path users.
Then there is the uneven surface over the Boro-Nunthorpe line once the crossing gates are open.
Following down the old Chicago-Fleet road, there are potholes, litter and uneven pavements - interspersed with inconveniently planted trees - forcing people on to the road.
Once you get closer to the tunnel under the Boro-Redcar line, there are more poles which squeeze foot-passengers and the dip is quite deep.
The centre railings also forces people together in a not well lit or clean subway.
Once the other side - the camber up to Windward Way is very steep - which can be difficult to navigate.
Is this really the best way to provide access to the stadium?
And dont anyone tell us we can walk around the dock to the Albert Bridge - because its a long way if you need to get into town that way. There is also no bus which takes us there.

Lads, It takes me 15 minutes to walk from the station to the ground and I'm no whippersnapper!
There used to be a shuttle bus but that was discontinued due to lack of use.

Not that I go to many away games these days, but I can't think of any ground that has the nearest public transport, bus train or tram, further away. Bound to one that is further away someone who goes to recent away matches regularly might know.

We are 66th closest to a train station in the league according to research done in 2016. Its a pretty grim walk especially in winter. The walk to ayresome seemed easier, even though it was further. It was level, you could stop in pubs cafes takeaways on the way and there were buses a lot closer too.
Correct mowtownjunk. The access to to riverside is abysmal. Yet I am sure it could be sorted quite easily but they can't be bothered is the honest answer. The club, the police, stewards. Its easier to just shut off roads that the public paid for.

We have a completely flat, almost traffic-free, 15 minute walk / 10 minute march to a station large enough to accommodate matchday crowds, with both local stopper trains and intercity services.

How many other clubs can claim that? Crewe, and ... erm ...

There are loads of problems getting trains to/from Boro games, but the station really isn't one of them.

Apparently 65 other league club have stations closer than us, according to research in 2016. So I would say plenty of clubs . There is no way you can make to the train station in 10 minutes without running or jogging part of the way. For anyone not fully fit it is not an easy walk. It is a 20 minute walk unless you walk quickly and unlike in pretty much every other ground there are no bus stops near by.

The key issue here is that access to public transport is either
(i) via two stops on Borough Road, the other side of the A66 [nearly a mile away],
(ii)a walk navigating steep cambers, narrow railed dingy subways and walking on the road- bringing us out into a drive-thru car park which is always dangerous,
(iii) or round the dock to the railway station - more than a mile away.

Clearly, public transport or access to it, wasnt given a thought when the place was built.

The irony is that the Club have recognised that public transport to the ground is none-existent - so they have introduced the MFC Bus from East Cleveland on Matchdays! Perhaps looking at other options and someone local may take up the cudgel and look at the viability of matchday buses? Clearly Arriva arent interested - otherwise they would have done something long ago [if it made them a tidy profit£££].

West Brom have "The Hawthorns", but it's tiny and only gets local trains; I usually walk direct to Smethick Galton Bridge instead. Birmingham has Bordesley, which is basically a cupboard next to some tracks and only takes you to the city centre anyway. Coventry has it's own dedicated station next door, which bafflingly seems to have trains at any time except after the game finishes! And so on.

I travel around the country watching Boro, usually by train, and I'm struggling to think of the last time I went to a ground with better rail infrastructure than the Riverside.

Takes me exactly 10 minutes from exiting the doors of the South Stand to standing on platform 1 - trust me, I've timed it!
