Todays MOTM vs Blackburn Rovers

McCabe was the best, Gilbert should have been hooked instead of him.

Dijksteel was good value, he has been one of our better players in the last few weeks.

Probably Clarke did ok.
McCabe did no more than expected, which was to be neat and tidy but with barlassor being so passive, neat and tidy just isn’t enough and Carrick should’ve known that was going to happen.
Not McCabes fault, from what I’ve seen of him, he deserves as many chances as Barlassor but never alongside another player who is also terrified in possession….

I wasn’t expecting McCabe to be a game changer because he is so inexperienced but he did a lot of good and creative things in the midfield and has quick feet so deserves some credit on a very bad day.

He also showed a bit of effort, seemingly a rare commodity amongst a number of our players today. I don’t like contributing to campaigns on here against individual players so I will just say that I don’t think Barlaser should be scapegoated for what is a team failure.

You are criticising the management but shouldn’t highly paid professional footballers provide effort for the fans as a bare minimum regardless of the manager?

The short answer to your question is no. Players are human beings and in many respects, just like you and me, if they stop listening or feeling inspired by the person leading them then, as we would in any other work environment, your standards fall, and so that’s why this is on Carrick.
He gave lots of players a chance today, was arrogant enough to play a winger centre forward who can’t play there.
It goes on and on with Carrick but he’s like the Donald JT of Middlesbrough, he can seemingly do no wrong.

Honestly, watch Portsmouth come at us next week with all they have and they have a good home record.
I really fear for us when teams get at us because we have a soft centre (and it boils my pi$$ to admit that about our proud club)

Barlaser* was one of our biggest threats today with 2 attempts at goal.

I think you are trying to nail Carrick and you are entitled to your opinion but I disagree I think the players are just as culpable, as would anybody in any industry who was going to work as human beings and not bothering their backsides for the wages they are earning.

In football, the players have two bosses - the club and the paying fans.

It’s not that they are not bothering backsides though - they are just dropping their standards by 10-20ish % and that’s enough to be bang average, the fact that Blackburn were right at it and bright and full of effort was the difference.
We did so with around 7 players who aren’t first team players and therefore you’d expect them to be 110% motivated to go out there and affect the game….but no they didn’t, why ?
Because their leader can’t motivate a performance from them 🤷🏻‍♂️

McCabe..
Didn't look over awed or out of his depth , and also for putting a harder tackle in than anyone else playing CM has in months.
(Got booked for it though)

The game was putrid as were most of our team. Passing was abysmal, no urgency, no threat for most of the game. As bad a performance I have seen in a long while.
Dijksteel was the only one who looked anything like. McCabe was ok today nothing more but needs to go out on loan as when Howson and Morris are back he will not even make the bench. Saying that he was much better than Barlaser today who has no attributes whatsoever to make me think he should be anyway near the first team. Gilbert, big chance for him today but he never took it and showed how far he is behind Azzaz. That said it took a while for Azzaz to grow into the position. McGree in all honesty I would get rid of him. Does not look interested, does not want to play wide left and so often leaves Engel(or whoever is playing) on their own with no help going forward or help tracking back. Glover he is nowhere near good enough for a Championship side. Two centre backs both looked like carthorses today.

A thoroughly depressing day.

This is probably the most accurate assessment of today, it was very poor. No hint of trying anything different from the usual format.
Cup games used to provide excitement and maybe hope - a chance to create extra momentum and raise the feeling around the club… with changes , and a winner takes all outcome why do we stick to this often turgid system ? And today with lesser players . Hamilton just looks awful , I can’t think what we should do with him but he is so poor to this point , not one redeeming feature really.
McGree has a lot of fans , but I’m with you… he doesn’t fit this system at all and often looks like he can’t be bothered . Losing is less important than how we played today. - I’d go down fighting , today was Cak

Thats what is a worry that players coming in should be going hell for leather to impress but it didn't work out like that at all.

Out of interest how many regulars did Blackburn rest.

Howson. Didn't put a foot wrong.
He was rubbish. I didn't see him leading a single song yesterday. Part time supporter.

I wouldn't mind betting he'll have bought the cheap ticket but not turned up, to get the priority points for a ticket for the next away game he wants to rock up at.
