Time to make facemasks mandatory everywhere public?

I really enjoy coming on here and having a read. Wearing a mask feels like the devils work! Basically by wearing one you are killing yourself. If you don't wear one you kill everyone else!
I think the reality perhaps may lie somewhere in the middle as with everything- absence of evidence is not necessarily absence of effect- until the evidence is generated we can only work with plausible hypothesis/ observed effects. They may help, but as it is such a polar argument most won't adhere and therefore it will likely be ineffective unless enforced.
The idea of wearing full PPE is perhaps a strawman- the idea suggested for mask wearing is water droplet containment- which may be useful in enclosed spaces/ areas of increased occupancy/ places people are in for sustained periods. Outdoors in the open this would not be necessary or indeed effective and a waste of time.
Interesting reading the Greenhalgh paper and opposition- the idea that if you have the virus you may make yourself worse due to the virus remaining behind the mask versus potentially spreading the virus to many others by not covering it with a mask. Which side of the fence would you prefer to be on?
