Three points debacle

The premier league and the clubs around us wanted a sacrifice and were it. As some one said they saw blood in the water and we we’re doomed.

listen to George Carman QC account of the trial he is supposed to have said to Steve gibson that the decision had already been made and that we had lost the case before we entered the room the the appeal/hearing was a sham.

this from the indy
“The Premier League's spokesman Mike Lee said: "It would be inappropriate for us to comment at this stage but obviously we believe the original decision was a correct one."

Says it all.

Blackburn also had legal representatives there ??? what was that about.

look at how the likes of souness Southampton and redknapp acted. I have my forgotten and how any Boro fan can defend the fa at how we were treated in this is shocking. We were completely shafted.

Let’s not forget it was the DURHAM FA that sent us down as well

The board comprised Geoffrey Thompson, chairman of the FA's disciplinary committee, Barry Bright, the committee's vice chairman, and Frank Pattison of the Durham FA. It heard argument from Blackburn that they should be given the game, but decided that was neither practical nor appropriate. It also ordered Middlesbrough to pay the costs of both the Premier League and the appeal board.
It was a rare defeat for Carman, whose grateful clients include the former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe, Elton John and the Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan. "Obviously I'm disappointed and we will have to consider the impact of this decision," Carman said.”

Those 3 points also put us below sunderland as a direct influence of the Durham FA.

when he died Pattison was described as a life long sunderland fan.

The other managers reactions

There was sympathy and relief from Harry Redknapp, the manager of West Ham, one of Middlesbrough's fellow relegation candidates. "I feel sorry for Bryan Robson, but at the same time we are all selfish and, let's be honest, everyone is only interested in their own team.
"Every manager in the bottom seven apart from Bryan will be saying `that's a good result'. I'd be a hypocrite and a liar if I said I was disappointed."
Jim Smith supported the board. "I cannot believe that a professional club cannot turn out a team and I think the decision to take away three points was correct," the Derby County manager said. "If a team in the Sunday morning league had acted like that, they would have been thrown out."

I'm pretty sure that in all the levels of football I've been involved in, the punishment for failure to turn up for a fixture is the win, and 3 points, being awarded to the opposition team.
In effect, the 1997 decision was to award EVERY other team 3 points.

Yep people often forget that we were robbed of a precious win that we won fair and square so in effect were penalised twice.

it was a shocking decision and we were completely shafted. Honestly shocked any Boro fan can be ok with this even now.

it set us back a decade and we’ve prob still never fully recovered in to what we as a club had amassed squad wise.

Over the years following it every other club fan I spoke to on holiday etc all agreed with the penalty so we had no support .
I think it was that we were becoming a trendy ‘sexy‘ club ( even our FA cup song was a hit ) rising above our station and they Didn’t like it . After all who did we think we were ? Even Zola got player of the season and TLF was awesome .

I couldn't ever forgive Redknapp after his mouthing off against us in the press, which itself had been full of 'Moneybags Middlesbrough' headlines for months. Hated him then and now. I still get angry after all these years, whenever I think of the dodgy f*cker's horrible face.

I remember that prat David Mellor telling the world that we were chanting 'Sieg Heil' at the Chelsea Cup Final, and not 'Three Points'! Tosser.
I remember thinking I had misheard him due to that blooming golf ball sized hailstorm outside Luton on M1 on way home. Damaged my car with loads of dents and summed up how that season felt.

And as Newy stated above, did we ever get an apology or retraction?! Did we hell. Just another example of the contempt for us over the years.

I thought Harry Rednapp was the only manager who supported us

At the end of the day the points shouldn't have made an iota to our season, that team should have comfortably stayed up, above some of the teams around us

That was our problem not the minus 3 points, yes they took points away that we had lawfully won

The fairest way should have been to give Blackburn the win, if they can't give points to Blackburn because they haven't earned them then how can they take them away

Redknapp was by far the worst. The Blackburn coach, Parkes, was constantly in the press telling everyone how 'amateur' we were. As said countless times, this would've never happened had it been any other club. We should ALL be still bitter at the injustice. For God's sake, just give Blackburn the points and that's it, not give everyone an extra three!

is it too late for a deformation of character class action law suit, Mellor, the media outlets that reported the statements without a notice or retraction. how much has the club lost in advertising revenue over the years?

that's what is supposed to happen. we effectively forfeited the match.. the only thing I can think of is that we pushed too hard to have the game replayed at no cost to us (points or fine wise) if that was the case then I can see why they came down so hard on us.

why did we have nothing in writing? pure naivety on that point.

plenty of first teamers have since been on record stating that they could have played.. would be interesting to know exactly what players would have been available... seen as it's tortured me for 23 years

I don't there was any precedent though. The was the first time the PL had to deal with a situation like this.

We tried to kid the prem lge
I thought well done robbo at the time and we’d get away with it

overall put us back years getting relegated
Honestly we never have got over it
Went down we sold players and then went to sign old brits pally cooper etc

Those days were great

We certainly didn't try to kid anyone. We may have gone down the wrong road and made mistakes but to suggest that we tried to kid anyone is simply ludicrous.
