This day 1974 - David Armstrong secures promotion for the best Boro team in my lifetime

David Armstrong, who started his amazing consecutive run on 24th March 1973, one day short of a full year, when he scored his 4th goal of the season & the only goal of the game & amazingly, with 7 games remaining, secured promotion back to the 1st Division

The mighty Boro had made it back after 20 years out out of the top flight

Between 1954 & 1974, the Boro had Walter Rowley who took us down
1952-1954, Bob Dennison
1954-1963, Raich Carter 1963-1966
Stan Anderson 1966-1973
Big Jack
Harold Shepherdson had 2 stints as caretaker manager

A crowd of 26,877 saw the soon to be champions gain the required points to guarantee promotion & what Boro fans, home & around the world, had been waiting for since going joint top when, on the 29th September, the Boro beat then leaders Bristol City 2-0

All these years later we're still remembering the 1973-74 team with such affection

Boro team:
Jim Platt
John Craggs
Frank Spraggon
Graeme Souness
Stuey Boam
Willie Maddren
Bobby Murdoch
David Mills
John Hickton
Alan Foggon
David Armstrong
Sub - Peter Brine

Boro and Oxford = Promotion 1967 1974 1998
If we stay in the Championship then we should be rooting for them to get promoted this year for two reasons.
They are currently 5th in League 1.
1 If they go up Sunderland don't
2 We would be nailed on to go up next season

Memories
You can’t buy them
Are they rose tinted

It was a game then not a business
Honest pro’s
Game for men

I always tell young uns that an oldie would love today’s pitches and rules
However not many modern pros would like going back - only the top guys would survive
