The "Zak Steffen" watch

It's such a confidence position, that drawing attention to his deficiencies is self-fulfilling. (I doubt he reads this though)!

It's not in our interest to undermine his confidence. Even if he is American... 😁

I defended him at the start as I believe he is a good stopper but he is just getting worse game after and needs to be dropped as he could cost us promotion in a similair vein to Lumley last season.

I think he's improved considerably since start of season. Catching and shot stopping both better. Still going to make mistakes passing out, all players misplace passes, it's just more jarring when you see a keeper do it.

My immediate thought when the mistake happened on Saturday was it was the defenders fault. I have watched it on highlights since and it looks more like a goalies fault,, but it is a high risk strategy that will go wrong sometimes. Sheff Utd will be looking to force an error on Wednesday, I just hope we are really up for it, it will be a battle.

This is exactly right. If you got all the Boro goalkeepers from history to play five a side with no outfield players how would Steffen fare against the others with his short passing? It would be pretty good I’d predict, it’s just that he’s been asked to play a lot more than previous keepers so it looks “worse” somehow, and yet so many folk can’t see that holistically we have scored lots of goals since Carrick took over and he is the one he wants in goal. I’m happy to trust his judgement while results are good tbh. If at any point he starts to look clueless then maybe I’ll question him.

Good job that the Cardiff header bounced over the bar when Steffan came and got nowhere near the cross, otherwise we'd be talking about 2 goalkeeper mistakes giving 2 goals (and maybe 2 points) away.
I’m absolutely sure Carrick and woodgate have discussed this privately but realise he’s our best option, but needs fixing because Carrick isn’t blind, and can see Steffen doesn’t have that vigilance when passing, he’s careless, at times, which leads to goals. I’m sure Carrick is aware but perhaps is stuck with him until the seasons end as he doesn’t rate Roberts any higher…

I’ve got no problem with Steffen last night. We were hemmed in by SU and especially Howson was less available than he normally is.
A few of Zak’s passes didn’t get to their target but a few round me calling him sh**e that he doesn’t launch it long don’t seem to get that just handing possession back isn’t Carricks style.
Worked out ok last night and Steffen would have been in the mix for MOTM if Hackney hadn’t put in a world class performance.
