* The Unofficial "Official" Reading V Boro Match-Day Thread *

Wilder needs to shoulder the blame. If we don’t have the players to play your brand of football yet, ensure we’re solid until we do. He hasn’t, an we’ve already lost 12 points.

Tony Mowbray said it about Woodgate, it’s all well and good trying to change the culture, but you need to find a way to win.
It doesnt matter what formation you play if the players are blowing hot and cold. His options off the bench today were watmore, hoppe and crooks. He changed it. Each of them had 2 chances each and they missed. Wilder didn’t tell them to miss.

No but he put them on. Crooks has been a mainstay for the last year and Watmore played well on Wednesday. He didn’t start them. Watmore has started every game this season so I don’t buy the needing a rest bullshït.

Watmore only played 60 minutes against West Brom, he came off at half time against QPR, he didn't start against Sheffield United, he ran himself in to the ground on Wednesday.

He absolutely will have needed a rest.

Wilder, and Warnock before him, aren't constantly discussing managing his chronic injuries for the craic.

So why start him against Barnsley then?

Presumably because he knew he wasn't going to start him against Sheffield United.

He'd had a poor start to the season and Akpom came on and completely changed the game against QPR.

Watmore has only played 80+ minutes in 19% of his games here.
He's always getting substituted because he's ran out of steam, or coming off the bench to make an impact.

Home after 1hr 20.... That's to pompey.

The only good thing about today was the Reading Park and ride. I've never been out so quick👌

That's it really. I can't find any other positives. I suppose it's another 'we didn't deserve to lose'. We were awful yet did enough 2nd half to have got something. Although doesn't excuse the first 45.

I'd say frig looking for a 10mil CF and sort out the defence. We are 5 games in and don't know our best back 3. Just go 'back to basics' and start looking at clean sheets as a priority. Dare I say Smith at RB maybe a better defensive option.

It's unfair on Lenihan because he's played well last two games but vs Swansea I'd go back to Djiksteel, Fry and McNair, bring Crooks back into the side and replace McGree with a striker.

So why start him in the amount of games we have this season? For the record I like Watmore, but Wilder has been vocal about his history and how much he can play him, but he’s played more minutes than any other striker this season.

I am not sure why it matters if they start a game or come on as subs. The changes that were made led to chances for those players. If they are not clinical enough we need better players. I don’t understand why some are saying we need to change formation cos the same players are going to have to take chances. We need better forwards and midfielders.

Forss had only just came in against West Brom.

Akpom was short of match fitness against QPR.

Forss had a knock against Stoke and Akpom was injured, Hoppe was still getting up to speed.

All explainable and Wilder's said as much in interviews.

With Muniz in with a week's training, I expect Watmore will start up front alongside him on Saturday, because Forss struggled again today.

Formation isn't the issue.

Heard people complaining to go 442, that's the old fallback that people go to. But we don't have the players for that.

Stick to our guns 352, possession based, but move the ball quicker, get the wing backs to braver, get a bit more physical presence and braver defenders, get a bit more energy in the middle, and a bit more guile up top.

Oh dear.
Not to worry - there`s a grenade going off in the dressing room and at Rockcliffe Park.
The fall-out might be players who have been here too long?

Not sure we have the players for 3-5-2, despite all the comings and goings.

Just to reinforce that Watmore was rested, here's a direct quote from Wilder on it:

"If you look at the top of the pitch, Chuba (Akpom) is injured, Duncan (Watmore) couldn’t start so we went with young Marcus Forss who tries to run off the shoulder."
