Its that time again>>>>>
Its back to the bread and butta lads an lasses.
Brighton is now history and Michael Carrick felt the score was "a bit harsh on the boys", but [against Millwall] "that wont effect the performance".
"The boys have reacted really well. We came in and the boys have had a really good week [and] been really positive. They`ve bounced back really well". Were there any lessons he could take from the Brighton game? "Yes. Theres always lessons. Sometimes you learn the most when you`ve had a set back". As usual, he was the calm and pragmatic Michael Carrick we have come to know.
Facing up to Millwall. Carrick expects "a different challenge" and appears to have done his homework on the game the lions play: he noted how they work hard on getting in defenders faces and do a lot of work in the box. A comment from a reporter prompted Carrick to say he felt our defence was doing well - getting better - and well up for the job against Millwall. He acknowledged that we cant afford to keep going a goal behind and highlighted the importance of getting "them clean sheets". "Evey game is different" - you could play the same team twice in a week and each game would be different.
Changes to tomorrows team?
"There`s nothing rash going on by any stretch. We`re quite calm about things. We might make some changes, but thats the beauty of having so many options within the squad. This team wont be a case of reacting to the result against Brighton."
Perhaps the most interesting comments the Gaffa made were those about the squad and about the effects of the way a Manager approaches his players: he was inevitably asked about Chuba`s Player of The Month Award and also about "ins and outs". What of Hoppe? The U21`s?...etc.
Chuba: "Hes been fantastic since I`ve came here. His presense and overall contribution in the squad is fantastic. The biggest thing is he is a team player and has a big impact on how we play as a team.....He`s happy here. He`s a big part of what we do. He comes in smiling everyday, working hard and he`s getting the reward for it." It was pretty clear that neither the Club, nor Michael Carrick will be selling Chuba anytime soon. For players to succeed - "you need things to go your way at times. You need certain Managers to like you and certain Managers to stay."
Clearly, he believes continuity and consistency are important to players - and he should know - if Managers keep changing and individual players are not in their plans - this impacts a players performance. That might sound "common sense", but as fans we sometimes take what we see on the pitch as the responsibility of the player or of the Manager. Carrick knows from his experience at Spurs - where he wasnt always "in favour" - he would still work extremely hard and sometimes not even get on the bench. Its been written elsewhere, but its worth repeating, Michael Carrick always talks of "we" and "the boys" and "the staff" as one. He doesnt use glib words or phrases. He always deflects praise from himself onto the team and the coaching staff. Success on the pitch is all pulling together in the same direction at the same time.
Hoppe? "He`s a great lad. I really like him. He comes in training everyday and hes a good part of the squad, in terms of his personality and character. He comes in with a great attitude and is...striving to get better all the time". The Gaffa is aware that he might not have had as many minutes "as he would like", but he emphasised there is a long way to go and the lads have to earn their plasce in the team. Cameron Archer? He`s getting to know the group. He`s "settled really well. It was important to get in the flow" [against Brighton]. "Cameron will get plenty of football". Definitely not a development player then!
"Ins and outs"? The same reporters asking the same questions and sometimes answering them too! Any news then Michael?
"At this moment in time, sitting here, I`ve nothing to tell you, but we`ll have to wait and see"!
Well said Gaffa. He doesnt give much away and keeps the assembled journo`s sniffing.
Finally. He watched the U21`s earlier in the week against Sunderland. What did he think of it?
"Quiet game wasnt it"?!
So. Its on to Millwall at The Riverside. The Lions are flying high and arent there by chance. Like ourselves, they have taken hard knocks against clubs with bigger squads and overcome big challenges. It says a lot about their Manager, Gary Rowett.
We`ve won six out of the last seven league games.
Lets hope it continues.
Lets go!
