* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Huddersfield Town Match - Day Thread *

We also produce very few shooting chances, whereas our opponents (no matter who) will always get at least a couple of opportunities.
No matter how brilliant your defence the opposition will always have a chance at goal.

No matter how woeful you are going forward you will always get a chance to score.

It's why brilliant keepers and strikers are worth their weight in gold.

I though Daniels was good today but we need to upgrade on both positions for next season.

it’s not the defeat that upsets you, anyone can lose it’s the nature of the defeat. Players arguing with each other, needless fouls and bookings out of utter frustration. Lack of discipline, organisation quality or class from us. Bar the keeper and Djiksteel nobody played well. Rudderless and pretty pathetic display - outplayed by a well organised team who played as a unit - a team. Everything we were not today. Lots of cracks showing today. Wilder will need to earn his coin but we didn’t look anything like a team today.

Our build up play has gone from being quick and incisive to slow and ponderous lately. The end result is massively congested penalty areas with no room to play passes and too much pressure on the ball to leave an opening to shoot.
I keep mentioning the pace of the games and it is so important to play at a decent tempo. I'm not saying it should be 100 mph, but we certainly can't expect to trouble teams playing at the pace we currently are.
Could it be a lack of fitness (or fatigue) as much as a lack of confidence that has seen our pressing and harrying turn into chasing and desperate tackling?

On the button. There comes a time you just shoot, go for it.

I was going to say I,m devastated , but in all honesty I said before the match to my son that Boro would lose 0-2 , no goals in the team , nobody willing to shoot , just so frustrating to watch this team

I think part of it is that a lot of teams are now content to sit back against us, play on the counter and look for set pieces. That’s making us play safe to try and reduce the amount of turnovers and chances for them to counter. The only team that’s really had a go at us in this run of games is Fulham which was also our best performance.

All of that has made us hesitant and our confidence looks completely shot. We need to find a way to create chances or at least build pressure when the opponents are happy to sit in. The triangles we had going with Crooks/Dijksteel/Jones seem to be gone as well, I guess opponents are stopping us getting into those areas as they know that’s our biggest threat.

Fatigue definitely. We look lethargic, slow and tired. The season has caught up with some of them. Jones, Crooks, Howson were key players in our purple patches and they look very jaded in the last few games. Fry has been key at the back and when he is out we don’t look anywhere near as assured. The goalkeeper doesn’t help of course.

I can't claim to know a lot about football really.
Bit I know what I like and I didn't enjoy that.
Even I can see we are going nowhere this season.
But I enjoyed the cup games so I know this team can play when it wants to.
Let's see what happens.

It's not just about today though is it. We had a couple of months where we were one of if not the form team in the division. Scoring goals and winning games. Late comebacks, beating Premier league sides. But that takes confidence to maintain. We've eroded ours with week after week of playing forwards that everybody knows will do nothing well before kick off.
Sorry, but I don't agree with that and the evidence doesn't support it either

The truth is that none of our forwards have done it often enough this season and its the single biggest reason why its the area of the team that needs the most work this summer.

Sporar has been generally poor, Watmore ok only in short bursts, same for Balogun and Connolly hasn't shown enough, both in terms of all round play and goals. And I'm not sure Wilder thinks Coburn can play in his team and neither am I.

In truth I hope we have a clean sweep in the summer, we need a couple quality signings - it's easy to see why we were so keen on Keinan Davis, because we lack a physical presence to help the team get up the pitch, albeit he wouldn't have helped today I don't think.

Our dip in form is both alarming and worrying. How many players are worth their game given recent performances? Not many I would say. Powder puff attack, outfought in midfield and lacking pace in defence.

Bigger job to do next season than Wilder will have given thought to
And maybe that's a blessing, to see the true worth of the squad he has now, rather than later, as disappointing as it is for our play off hopes?
