* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Huddersfield Match-Day Thread *

Well. Reasonable performance. We should be putting Huddersfield away at home though, and should have with the chances we had.
Lath looked good. His movement was decent and hackney will find him. We looked to have loads of pace up front which is good.
Silvera needs a loan. Sign willock. Play him. Let someone else sort out silveras rough edges.
Engel was ok defensively. His distribution was poor and he didn't link up well with his teammates.
Rav van den bergkamp or whatever he's called was solid and picked up his man really well at the back post but offered nothing going forward. Played like a centreback at full back.
Rogers was good. Howson should have been sent off.
Huddersfield fouled us well. Broke up our play. I don't understand why we don't try to take them quicker. We are working at throw ins though you could see that. Keeping possession better.
I was unimpressed with dieng. He did not command his area well. Steffen was similar in the early days and got better. I'm glad he realised we were struggling with the press and went long at times.

We failed to pen them in or get any sustained pressure which we were doing a lot last season. We aren't looking after the ball anywhere near as we did in the final third. Few too many players playing individually at the minute.

Team has a lot of new players in and looks like it. I'm expecting is to get better as players get to know one another.

I think with all the pace upfront it would be an idea to drop the ten at times and put barlaser in a three looking to play through balls. Especially late in games. Him mcgree and hackney looking for our centre forward and right winger.

My take on the game.

We got right at them first half, but lost a bit of confidence in failing to break them down. Mistake from a corner and we were harshly punished. Good response from us though, and by the end we had ran the legs off them but couldn't get that final goal, but we really really should.

Dieng 6 - nothing he could do about the goal, a wobbly moment with his feet, and a moment where he could have been lobbed
Van Den Berg 6 - did a job, his heading at the back post stopped the cross field ball from killing us, tried his best getting forward including a good lung buster at the end. He looks a decent back up, and good for his age
Fry 6 - Couldn't do a lot with the own goal should have been cleared in front of him.
Lenihan 6 - not his usual assured self, got outmuscled a bit
Engel 6 - steady start, better than Coulson, playing against two tricky players on that side but he stuck at it, tried to get forward. Lot more to come from him, I think
Hackney 6 - Gave the ball away too easily too often, needs to snap out of it and get last seasons form back, saying that Hell of a goal and a great ball to LL could have been an assist
Howson 7 - gave us a lot more control in midfield
Forss 6 - set a couple of chances up and had a great shot but he came off the post for the near post corner and didn't attack the cross, effectively taking himself out of the game and leaving Fry in trouble. Basic stuff.
Rogers 8 - created numerous opportunities, particularly in the first half, should have had at least 2 assists to add to the 3 he should have had last week. He's gonna be a great player in that role if we can get enough quality around him.
Silvera 5 - gave the ball away too often, made the wrong decisions and his finishing was poor. Saying that, he's adjusting to a different team and league and country. He'll be a decent sub for us this year, but I'd get Willock in and let Silvera be his understudy.
Latte Lath 8 - Great hold up play , can run in behind, strong pacy, great work out of possession, just lacks a bit of shooting composure, if he had that he'd be a 20m player playing in Serie A. Lots to work with there, think he will be a cult hero.

Crooks 7 - handful when he came on, with some good passing
McGree 7 - gave us a second wind in the last 10 mins and was unlucky not to have an assist
Jones 7 - used his pace well and again should have had an assist,

I think this team is a work in progress and will take a little time, and a player or two, before we are firing on all cylinders.

ELL looks a fantastic signing, Engel struggled a bit with the pace and his fitness needs to improve, but I've seen enough to think he'll be a good signing for us too.

VdB looks very much at home and he's another that will improve massively with games and experience.

I don't think we'll reach the levels of last season, but lots to optimistic about.

Silvera is the one I'm least sure about, he's got the raw talent but he needs to do the simple things better
Are you me ?

If I was goint to write my match summary it would have been that word for word :D

I agree with most of that except that Rogers has slid the ball three about 8 times in 2 games, which is more than Barlaser has since he got here. Rogers needs to play, we just need better quality around him to score the goals.

Bang average team , but a fairly entertaining game. 8 points off an automatic spot already .

I think this team is a lot stronger than the first two games. Can see the potential. No problem with Engel - solid first game. Fry has been poor for me. I Like. Lath - should have put the one on one away but doesn’t seem to have dented his confidence- he certainly puts a shift in. Really not sure what the wardrobe brings when he comes on? Hope he sticks one in now to shut me up!
I guess our weaknesses have been both fullbacks CM and CF so far. We changed all those. I still think we are two players short in this first team. Hopefully sole that this week

Plymouth Argyle were keen on Silvera.

Hoenestly, I feel much more confident now about the season ahead. The front four will cause problems for any side. I think Lath will score goals. Hackney and Howson proved today that they are by far our best midfield partnership. We've really missed Howson so far. The defence is our only worry because they're unsettled. But I think once we have a proper right back and Engel is settled, we'll be fine.

The side is starting to come together now. And I'd be surprised if at least one or two loans didn't come in before the season stars.

Unless we bring real quality and know how in. Its a transition/consolidation season for me. Not enough proven goalscorers in the team at present. Far too powder puff

Remember this being said about Akpom
The fans were fuming when he was thrown into the team at the start of last season 😜
I don't think they were. We were short of options and Akpom was impressive against Marseille. Fans were mainly hopeful about him.

I could go and pull up these threads from last year. Most were still negative towards Akpom at the beginning of October. The forum lost its collective mind when we ended the transfer window with Akpom as part of the squad. I'm sick of people rewriting history to suggest that most could see how good he was going to be at the beginning of last season.

For me the main problem today was lack of movement off the ball. If we are going to play the passign from the back game we need players to move and make spaces. It was very static at times today. Same goes for the throw ins where nobody moves and more often than not we lose possession. Also though Silvera's positional sense needs working on, he was all over the place. Exciting player at times but needs more discipline. New guys look promising.

Much better performance.
Liked the two new lads, especially Lath: chased the ball down, upset their defenders and pzzd off their goalkeeper.
We need to learn how to make the best out of corners and how to put away open goals.
Better all round.
Might get the the hard work done, where all the players train together for more than two sessions - in the coming week.
Look out for [possibly] three more incoming.
Lots of positives from today.
