Chris Wilder has described the next eight league games as "eight new challenges" - as important as every other match since he and his Management Team arrived at The Riverside. [See article - "Beyond Our Wilderest Dreams"].

Following last night`s results, Boro remain in the play-off places [6th] with two games in hand over Blackburn below them and Sheffield United in 5th. Tonights challenge is possibly the biggest yet, but with a vociferous home crowd - in Fortress Riverside - Boro wont fear the Londoners.

⚽Match Stats Summary:

Chris Wilder’s Middlesbrough came back from the international break with a bang, sweeping Peterborough aside by a 4-0 scoreline and consequently ending the day back in the play-off places.

That victory sealed a third run of 3+ straight clean sheets this season alone, as Middlesbrough now turn their attention to extending an incredible eight-game winning run of home league games.

“We are right in the play-off race, and we should be,” stated Wilder recently, and it’s hard to argue with that considering 1991 was the last year ‘Boro’ notched a longer run of consecutive home league wins (ten).

But with five clean sheets in the last six home H2Hs and a renewed sense of belief in the region, Middlesbrough will feel they have a chance of potentially bettering that streak, despite Wilder’s winless managerial H2H record vs Fulham (D1, L3).

A 2-0 win at QPR last time out helped Fulham maintain their comfortable gap at the top of the table whilst also moving them to within just eight goals of setting a new Championship scoring record during the regular season. Fulham will achieve that feat by averaging just one goal per game until the end of the season, well below their current 2.42 goals scoring average to this point.

That QPR victory also ended a two-game wobble for Fulham (D1, L1), who “reacted like a big team should” according to manager Marco Silva.

However, this is now Fulham’s fifth consecutive away game, so tired legs after trips to Wales, Yorkshire, the Midlands and most recently their London derby could take their toll.

Players to watch:

Duncan Watmore helped Middlesbrough achieve their biggest league win since 2014 with a goal and assist in the final ten minutes last time out, and his last four goals have now come beyond 85’.

Who else but Aleksandar Mitrović? Fulham’s record-breaking scorer has contributed to more Championship goals (G37, A7) than nine sides have scored ahead of this round.

Hot stat: Middlesbrough have not won a home league game against a side starting the day in first place since a 2-1 win over Derby back in 2014/15 (L3 since).

Fulham make the long trip to Middlesbrough knowing that victory will realistically put them on the brink of earning promotion to the Premier League.
While the leaders begin the week with a 14-point advantage over third position, Boro have moved back into the Championship playoff spots after recording successive league wins.

Having failed to win either of their final two fixtures before the international break, there was a little bit of pressure on Fulham as they prepared to make the shortest of trips to London rivals Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

However, a goal in each half from Aleksandar Mitrovic ensured that the Cottagers collected their 24th Championship victory of the campaign, moving them ever closer to an immediate return to the Premier League.

Marco Silva will insist that his team need to take one match at a time but with the teams in third position and lower struggling for consistency, two more wins may be enough to get over the line.

Despite their indifferent form, Fulham make the long trip to the Riverside Stadium with the best away record in the division, collecting 40 points from their 19 fixtures on the road.
Remarkably, this will be the Cottagers' fifth away fixture in succession, and they have the opportunity to end a testing run with 10 points from a possible 15.

However, Fulham face opponents in Middlesbrough who have won eight league matches in a row at their North-East home, not dropping points since a 2-1 defeat to Preston North End on November 23.

In sharp contrast, Chris Wilder had witnessed his players struggle on their travels during his reign until their recent successes at Birmingham City and Peterborough United.

Six goals have been scored without reply during that double-header, Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun netting in both games to take his recent tally to three strikes in four outings.
With five matches still to come at the Riverside, Wilder and his squad will be confident of maintaining their place in the playoffs, but such is the small margin of error that defeat on Wednesday could leave them outside of the top six once again.

Team News

Wilder could decide to stick with the Middlesbrough XI which started the demolition of Peterborough at the weekend.

Even if Neil Taylor recovers from injury, Marc Bola is expected to keep his spot at left wing-back, with the only alteration realistically coming in attack.
Duncan Watmore and Andraz Sporar may potentially come back into the team ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Aaron Connolly.

Silva is likely to hand a recall to Antonee Robinson, who was rested at the weekend after representing USA in World Cup qualifying.
Jean Michael Seri and Nathaniel Chalobah are both alternatives for Tom Cairney in the centre of midfield.

Middlesbrough possible starting lineup:
Lumley; Dijksteel, Fry, McNair; Jones, Crooks, Howson, Tavernier, Bola; Connolly, Balogun

Fulham possible starting lineup:
Rodak; Williams, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson; Reed, Chalobah; Wilson, Carvalho, Decordova-Reid; Mitrovic

We say: Middlesbrough 1-2 Fulham

On the back of their goal glut at Peterborough, Boro will be confident of pushing Fulham all the way on Wednesday evening. Nevertheless, we are backing the visitors to come out on top, perhaps by the odd goal in three, as they continue to canter towards the title.

Tom Cairney Looks Forward To Facing Boro:
index.jpg

Speaking to fulhamfc.com as the season run in commences, Tom Cairney expressed his delight after bouncing back in style with a West London derby win on Saturday.

“I enjoyed it a lot,” said our captain. “A London derby is always good to play in and we’ve had a good record at their place since I’ve been at the club - it’s been a nice ground for us.

“The atmosphere was top as well – a sellout. We brought a lot and when the second goal went in it was great for them (the fans), they were amazing from minute one.

“Obviously it was a disappointing result just before the international break so we had to perform and get a win and they played a big part in that.

“Every time I’ve played this season it’s been brilliant. It’s been good to come into a good side and a confident side.

“I tried to stamp my mark on the game which I thought I did and I think in the end we could’ve scored more goals.”

Tom Cairney gives the thumbs at at a job well done on Saturday

In a real all-round team display, Aleksandar Mitrović grabbed the headlines with his brace to further bolster his tally, a feat Cairney praised highly.

“It’s an incredible record,” he said. “37 goals in 36 games at any level is nothing short of remarkable.

“He deserves all the plaudits he’s getting and hopefully he can break 40.”

Mitro and Chalobah embrace the boss

The squad travel to Middlesbrough for the next outing on Wednesday evening, and our midfield maestro knows it will be a challenge.

“They’re a decent side. They had a great FA Cup run and scored four the other day so they’ll be full of confidence and looking to scalp us.

“It’s a difficult away day but our away form has been fantastic all season. We’ll go there to win."

With objectives so close to being met in terms of promotion for Fulham, Cairney is keeping a level head and insists we must take things game-by-game.

“Nothing will ever surprise me in this league.

“Teams can go on big runs of either winning or losing so we’re going to have to be seriously at it to win any game in this league and nothing changes from our point of view.”

⚽Pundits Predictions - Before the start of the 21/22 Season:

The Sky "pundits" synthesised statistics and assessment to compile a table of potential Promotion Prospects - based on the 20/21 season.
Perhaps this table highlights some accuracy, but also the unreliability of statistics. Football after all is about human beings - notoriously volatile and susceptible to emotions and physical changes and injuries >>>>

Great write up as always.

I am very confident for tonight which worries me. I just have a really good feeling that we are going to beat them. Absolutely huge if we do as well!

Fulham have scored 92 goals, just incredible after 38 games. What's the record for goals scored in the championship?

Wilder face.jpg

"We are up against the ultimate test"

Chris Wilder insisted at his media conference, there will be no difference in attitude or approach to tonight`s game, compared to previous games this season. Just because Fulham have been at the top for the majority of the season doesnt mean he is going about preparation any differently. He commented that "I have a word with senior players when [opposing] teams change shape and approach", suggesting that we need to be "tactically flexible" - able to "tweak" how he approaches different games.

But, his important priority is "to master that shape" - to use the training and our approach - to focus on our play and our tactics. No matter the challenges, we know how we play and what we have to do. "Fulham havent changed their shape" - "they have quality players all over the pitch" and "we are going to deal with that"! From a defensive position "we have to be on it" from the start of the 90 to the finish. Mastering Ronaldo and Kane - Chris commented that Dael, Paddy and Anfernee have a critical role tonight in stifling Fulhams attack.

Reference to Mitrovic, Wilson and Carvalho - Wilder pointed out, although they are a potential threat - it is "only because of the service they receive". A clear indication he intends to disrupt their game and destroy their opportunities to get men forward. Fulham arent a one-man-team and neither are we. He wants Dael to "be consistent" - just like in all the other big games this season and also to "wrap up" the likes of Harry Wilson.
"I expect sevens, eights and nines [across the team performance] on Wednesday".

"I dont want a blip - I want to keep [momentum] going". "We are up against the ultimate test"!
Chris expressed a confidence throughout the team and reported no important injury worries. He made a point of highlighting that Siliki is still available to call on if needed and reiterated that Martin Payero is only a week or so away from being fit.

"I`de liked to have been in a bit better position - but we are confident. The league is what it is". Fulham are a wealthy, well-supported club and have been in a leading position "from the get-go". He congratulated them - but then said promotion is not certain till the end of the season. Surely, there can be little doubt Fulham are heading back to the Premiership.

⚽Premier League flop? Flat-track bully? Why Aleksandar Mitrovic is now a different animal

"The tale has long gone that the 27-year-old has always been too good for the Championship and not good enough for the Premier League (much like Fulham) and many have been quick to put this sensational season down simply to the fact that he is back in the second tier following relegation last season - but he has more quality than that......

Manager Marco Silva has made training more regimented and turned Fulham into a far fitter side that can attack on a more consistent basis throughout games than under his predecessor, Scott Parker.

The striker has now been given far more freedom to roam the forward line in a team which sets up more chances for him and vice versa. Fans feel they got the better side of the deal when Mitrovic stayed at Craven Cottage and Parker departed.....

Not only do they have a striker scoring more than anyone before him in the Championship, but Mitrovic now has more assists (seven) than he has ever managed in a single season thanks to Silva’s system and his determination.

That hard work is something not many fans witness. During his early days at Newcastle, Mitrovic developed a reputation for being somewhat hotheaded, something he was keen to quash when arriving in west London."

Tension building, excitement rising, long time since we felt like this about Boro game's.
I have a feeling there will be a few goals tonight, don't know why just a gut feel.
C'mon Boro, back of the net

I never saw this coming 😂

I'm sure Jones is crocked. The other 3 changes seem strange if not injury related.

Then again some on here have been crying out for anyone but Connally. So see how that goes.
