Even before the game, Carrick spoke about what may be needed in terms of the squad going into the summer, in preparation for next season.

EFL Championship. Saturday 2nd March 2024. Stoke City v Middlesbrough. Bet365 Stadium. KO: 15:00 hrs.

Today's game [Saturday] represents different challenges for both clubs Managers and players, for different reasons. At this stage of the season, it's either a battle to ensure that (i) rite-of-passage to the play-offs or promotion. (ii) The best attempt to finish as high as possible for those whose play-off hopes are almost over and, finally, (iii) a battle to keep the club's future in the Championship for the 24/25 season.

[Leicester stuck 5 past Stoke with no reply]

For Stoke Manager, Steven Schumacher, today's game is probably going to be the most important of the season: Sheffield Wednesday have found form, just when it matters and are just behind Stoke, whose form has been dreadful and, find themselves in third-bottom place. In the last eight games, the Potters have won two [1-0 against QPR and Rotherham]. But they have conceded a total of 16 goals in the remaining six defeats. Those include Birmingham [1-2], Sunderland [1-3], Leicester [0-5], Blackburn [1-3], Coventry [0-1] and Cardiff [1-2]. With Rotherham [19 points] almost virtually relegated, thirteen points adrift of second-bottom Sheffield Wednesday [32 points] It's between Stoke and any team from QPR, Millwall, Huddersfield, Birmingham, Swansea, and Blackburn fighting it out from relegation.

[Stoke Manager Paul Lambert left the Potters after their ten-year top flight residence finished with relegation in 2018].

Stoke were relegated from The Premier League in 2018, but their time in the Championship hasn't been a happy one [apart from when playing us!] — finishing no higher than 14th in proceeding seasons! For a team which has spent considerable amounts on players during that period and seen 11 [Eleven!] Managers [including Caretaker Managers] Stoke are fighting for their lives. Morale is at rock bottom, so we can expect a fight from them tomorrow.

Michael Carrick
[From his Media Conference on Thursday 29th February 2024]

Hasn't quite admitted defeat in his aspirations for Boro to reach the Play-offs, even though we are eleven points clear of 6th place and with a game in hand. If we won that game in hand, right now, we would be on the same points as the Mackems [10th] on 47 points.

1709311919625.png

[Did home defeat to Plymouth virtually extinguish our hopes of reaching the play-offs ?]

However, although still his usual calm pragmatic, optimistic self, he gave off the feeling that the play-offs and promotion were all but extinguished after the defeat to Plymouth:

Obviously [the play-offs] you know it's tougher than it was before the game on Saturday, that's pretty obvious. It doesn't really change how we do things. It doesn't really change how we approach the next game you know, and anything can happen, so we got to still certainly keep believing and keep trying to do the right thing. That's the only way you know, I tell it to you [reporters] all the time. That's the only thing you can do. [It] is the next game you know, the bigger picture doesn't really count when you're going into one game. It's all about what happens on the next game .....regardless of what's happened or where we are. I don't remember, or I don't recall, any team going into the next game not trying to win it........ and certainly we're doing that. If we can do that over enough over the rest of the season, then see what we can achieve.

Carrick will be fortunate in the remaining games to see the majority of the squad back in line for selection. It feels ironic that he will have the best players to choose from at the back end of this season, than we did after that poor start and through till the New Year:

We've got a good few games coming up over the next couple of weeks, so the more bodies and the more we can choose from then obviously the better, said Carrick.

1709312351766.png
[We proved just what we can do when we give of our best]

Carrick spoke of players and the team needing to take “pride” in themselves to finish as high as possible in the league and not to make excuses. For him, it's not a matter of injuries, not having the right players available at the right time, placing square pegs in round holes, chopping and changing formations and inconsistency. It's down to try your best with what you've got. Unfortunately for Michael Carrick, this season has seen all of those issues, and amplified by the departure of Morgan Rogers and Matt Crooks. As he always says, “that's football” and “it is what it is”!

He knows Stoke will be fired up to win at home. He says the boys are looking forward to the challenge. But Stoke won't be in any frame of mind to roll over at their place. When the chips are down and the pressure is on, you can expect a team to be stronger, tougher, more willing to take their chances and use physical ability to get the points.

Perhaps the most significant comments in his recent media conference indicated his approach to next season, with an eye on existing players and possible incomings and outgoings. It's fair to assume that Carrick already has a good idea of whom he wants to keep, who he is ready to let go, and have targets for the Summer. Based on what he has said previously, plans will be well under way. The big issue will be what's available from the penny jar to bring in fresh blood, but that's another story for another day!

1709312098015.png
[Carrick observes his troops before the start of the campaign]

It doesn't as I said, it doesn't change, there's no extra scrutiny on the players from me at all. Obviously last year, last summer [talk was about] kind of squad was over players and ......a lot about that, will it be different this season? So is it going to be kind of minor tweaking [?] rather than [complete] overhaul ? And does that give you more chance to kind of build momentum through the back end of this season, taken through the summer? Next of course, in an Ideal World I think consistency and stability is what you need to kind of build on in terms of success and for the players as well to kind of understand where we're going.
[Michael Carrick].

For now, Carrick is focused on Stoke City. They've been a bit of a bogey team for us in recent years, but that won't stop us trying to get three valuable points. Even if it seems like we've lost the opportunity to get where we wanted this season, there's still plenty to play for and, that includes our players, some who may be looking over their shoulders, if they don't give 110%.

1709312436080.png
Reflecting back on the 20th anniversary of our 2004 Carling Cup win back in Cardiff, Carrick says he remembers The Riverside being a tough place to come to and recalls not getting too many positive results [!]. That may be a cause célèbre this week, but for now it's back to the grimy Potteries and that cold stadia in Staffordshire. If we turn up at our best, like we did at Leicester, we can expect a good result and a pleasant trip away. It would be nice to have that in our back pocket for the home game against Norwich next Wednesday.

We can do this.

Come on Boro!

Steven Schumacher

Steven Schumacher has vowed that his side will be on the front foot and aggressive as they aim to emerge victorious from their battle with Middlesbrough on Saturday.

City’s Head Coach reinforced calls from Interim Technical Director Jonathan Walters for a wall of noise from the Potters’ support this weekend but has equally recognized the onus is on his team to match the energy from the stands.

“That can inspire our players,” Schumacher explained.

“However, like I have always said, it goes hand in hand and the players have got to give our fans something to get behind.

“We have to start the game with the right mentality, get on the front foot and try to be aggressive and make it hard for Middlesbrough.

“That will be the message from us to the lads so, if we can do that and implement the gameplan, then I am sure the fans will get behind us, which will definitely help us in the long run.”

Walters, a City legend who made 271 first team appearances, commenced his first week in the role by meeting players and staff on Monday and Tuesday, delivering a passionate message of unity and togetherness heading into the season’s final quarter.
Schumacher believes that the former Potter’s presence, coupled with his experience, will carry significant benefit to staff and players at Clayton Wood.

“We had a good meeting with Jon on Tuesday and spoke about how we all need to be on the same page,” he added.

“We are going through a difficult time at the moment, so we all need to stick together and try to fight our way through.

“Jon will have a positive impact because he is a Stoke City legend, he knows the club inside out and better than most people in the building.

“He understands what a Stoke City player should look like and represent, so that has been a positive.

“He has been there for me too, he is supportive, so having him here has been good, we are glad to have him, and hopefully he can help us to get the results we need.”

The Potters’ Head Coach feels his players will need to display character and bravery to return to winning ways when they host the Teessiders.
Michael Carrick’s side arrive in ST4 following a 2-0 win at leaders Leicester City in their previous Championship away game, though that victory is Boro’s sole success in their last six league matches.

“We have to give it everything we have got because we are coming up against a really good team,” Schumacher continued.

“Middlesbrough are in a run of form which they won’t be pleased with, but it was only a couple of games ago they beat Leicester away, so we know how dangerous they can be.

“We need to make sure we are aggressive, organized and cause them problems."

He added: “We have to make sure we are in games, we can’t let one bit of adversity set us back as badly as it does.

“If we make a mistake, we have to get on with it and not go into our shell.

“We will need character and bravery because we still need to pass the ball. I understand that we don’t want to take unnecessary risks, but it takes bravery and courage to get on the ball and express yourself.

“That is what I believe in and feel gives us the best chance of winning games.

“I have huge belief in this group, and it is important that comes from me because I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t believe we had a decent squad. And I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think we had potential to be better.

“We are in a situation that nobody is happy with, but it is in our own hands, there is a quarter of the season left, and we have to take each game as it comes and be positive in every one because there are a lot of points to play for.”

Some crumbs from the famous Stoke City Fanzine v Boro:
1709317627513.png

My prediction?
It'll be a close first half, but remain 0-0 at half-time.
Someone will **** up about 55 mins, Boro take the lead.
Then it'll mainly be us attacking. We'll miss 2 great chances, but it'll end 1-0.
SS will say he was pleased with the response, some fans will say we played well, and he deserves another 326 games to get it right.

Stoke 62% possession 18 shots 0 on target
Boro 38% possession 1 shot 1 on target
0-1 Boro

1709317841024.png
Amid the anxiety, just remember, we'll only go down if we finish in the bottom three.

1709318002696.png
Absolutely s******g it already, to be honest. If ever any game was a must-win, it's this one. Middlesbrough having nothing to play for goes one of two ways - they don't give a s**t, and we actually win, or they turn up and play with a freedom and murder us. If we win, it'll be a 1-0, brown undies' affair.
Even though I have sort of accepted we'll go down, nobody actually wants it to happen, do they? I hope the players somehow summon enough effort and b******s to put some performances in and get some results.

* Good to see so much positivity about!

FACTS:

* Stoke haven’t completed a league double over Middlesbrough in 30 years (!) since 1993/94, when Lou Macari and Joe Jordan pulled off wins at Ayresome Park and the Victoria Ground.
1709319587244.jpeg
[Lou Macari in his days as Stoke Manager]

* Middlesbrough have only won two of their last 19 league visits to Stoke, in 1998 and 2020.

The last time was Neil Warnock`s first game in charge.

Fletcher and Tav scored the Boro goals.
The “Great Escape” had begun.
1709320227477.png

The win moved Boro up to 19th on 44 points.

Last Time Out - Stoke City:

Saturday 24th February
Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff 2 Stoke City 1

1709322318620.png
* Etete [5] and Ahearne-Grant [32] put Cardiff 2-0 up, before Bae [41] managed to get one back for the Potters just before half-time.

* Cardiff had gone six games at home without a win before this result.

* Cardiff hadn't scored at home since Boxing Day!

* It was Stoke’s sixth loss in seven games, which saw them drop into the bottom three relegation spot.

Apart from Lewis O’Brien who I hope we sign it’s time to bin off the ‘loan stars’. Get a proper Boro 11 who want to play for the shirt back in the side.

I'm not that bothered about what the team is. What I want to see is if stoke press us high up the field, I want to see us kicking it long from our goalkicks. The way we have been playing out recently is just dumb and suicidal.

We don't have the quality or consistency to play the “out from the back” tac.
It's the latest fashion. I've seen a few clubs adopt it.
Waste of time if you ask me.
Practising pinpoint ariel passes to our own players would be a good idea instead? [Like we did against Leicester] (y)

Man City have been known to do this

Tbf at Leicester we did mix the goal kicks up a bit.
Will be interesting whether we consider going 3 at the back and counter attacking tomorrow.
Will be my first visit since 1997/98 I think when Jaime Moreno scored iirc.

I actually find it a bit weird we are so reluctant to lift it even down the channels and mix it up. We are so intent on playing it around time and time again. It ridiculous how many pathetic goals we give away, its bad when even plymouth have sussed it to the point we could of conceeded 4 in the first half and had no complaints
