The unfair condemnation of Lukas Engel

He is bang average and no where near the level we need but anyone who wants to be blind to it carry on. He is not the only one either

Play him in the reserves to get his confidence up - if he keeps getting skinned by wide players then his confidence will be well and truly shot.
Its a tough one not knowing him. He knows he played sh*t on Tuesday, hooked at HT is bad.

Being replaced by a right footed young CB, who did a much better job.......painful.

But dropping him into the U23s could easily work the other way - could see him off.

If he's not starting I'd at least have him in the squad and let him know he's still part of things.

He must have some good aspects for Boro to sign him, but from now on, opposing teams will be playing on his “weaknesses “.

Turns out he is a real jack of all trades, and can turn his hand to anything, who knew....

The posts don't surprise me. Everybody is a football expert these days. The lad has moved from another country into one of the most competitive leagues in the world playing a style of football that may be different to what he has played.

It is embarrassing being a Boro fan at the minute, not for the performance of the team but the reaction of some "supporters".

Some performances have been way off, but I am not going to start raging anger at new players and a manager who has been with the club less than 12 months.

Its ok Frank,.... he was sh*te, lets hope he's not sh*te forever.

No need to be embarrassed, just call a spade a spade and lets all move on.

I agree with the above post, whoever said that the likes of Silvera, ELL and maybe Engel too would not normally be starting all these games so early, they'd have been squad players competing for places. The fact we've signed them from lesser leagues and thrown them in at the deep end starting every week is a bit unfair on them. I realise its because we lost so many players over the summer but no one is forcing Carrick to play Silvera over McGree and ELL over Forss at centre forward (who is vastly more experienced there in the division).

Silvera is getting crucified but he’s still young he’s in a new country and a new league and we expect him to hit the ground running.

He’s obviously trying too hard there’s no doubt he’s got the spirit and he does look talented but it’s tough ask expecting him to hit the ground running.

I checked them out on FM when we signed them and Engel, Silvera are probably what you expect, bottom end Championship / top end L1 with the potential to be very good Championship players.
Bangura and Lath we should expect to be starting immediately. It's unfortunate that Bangura has got injured so soon.
Gilbert incidentally is barely L1.

I agree with above, in normal circumstances they'd be subs and would be eased into the team (preferably a winning one).

Engel has had to play when he has as we haven't had any other LBs (bar Coulson who I think isn't the standaed we need). Carrick has to take some criticism for persevering with Silvera on Tuesday when he had more Championship-experienced options (eg Jones).

The criticism overall has been ridiculous though. They aren't the worst players ever to play for us, or Sunday league standard or whatever. Some posters on here really need to calm down and step away from here when we lose.

No idea about FM but agree with the last paragraph completely.

This is why Carrick has to take a lot of the blame to be fair. He is getting it wrong.

I agree he should 100 per cent be kept around the first team squad - nobody should be isolated unless they have a bad attitude. But a few games in the reserves will hopefully help him regain some confidence. I'd say the same goes for Silvera

The criciscm should be aimed at the recruitment team not engel. The lad is so way off the standard its staggering. People saying he needs time but if you dont have the pace to be a championship fullback thats not going to change. I suspect both fullbacks were panic buys without due diligence as we thought giles was signing

Is it unfair condemnation? I wasn't at the game Tuesday, but as long as the criticism isn't directed at him on the pitch during the 90 min, I don't think it is. I think its a fair reflection on his dreadful performances thus far. It's no coincidence Sheff Wed set up how they did Tuesday. That is a direct consequence of seeing how poorly he has played in his previous matches.

criticism of individual performances fine, but it's the writing off that I think is the unfairness. and I'm sure he reads/knows what is being said about him.

Since Tuesday, not so much on here, I must've seen around 30 different posts varying in the degrees of 'Worst player to ever play for our club' to 'Not even a footballer'

I think it is incredibly harsh the way our fanbase has absolutely torn into the new recruits after 7 games but especially Lukas Engel. He's looked slow and off the pace and on Tuesday night he was given the run around by their right back who was then nullified by RVDB.

However what people have to realise is he's came from a league with a much lower abillity, he's settling into a new country and team and he's only played 4 games and had a bit of an injury.

It's not really been on this site to much, but this is a place to rant, it's been Facebook and X but I just feel so sorry him, I hope he doesn't go on socials because what ever fragile confidence he has will be gone now.
agree to an extent, I mean he was terrible, but I wouldn't write him off as a Boro player just yet.

Dieng - he's a let a lot of goals in but none are particularly his fault. A decent signing and most fans seems moderately on board with him

Van Den Berg - For 19 playing out of position he's done well. He will be excellent at CB in 12-18 months. Most fans have gone easy on him, seen very little in the way of positivity about such a young player though

Lewis O'Brien - lots of niggling comments about him. "Expected more", "sideways passes", "no influence on the game". He's played two games and people are digging him out for not bossing games. He's still learning his team mates and he looks way above what Mowatt brought to the team last year

Silvera - suffered horrific abuse so far. To be fair he hasn't helped himself with his decision making, he's got a bit of pace a trick and a shot, but he's young and clearly needs coaching. Absolutely nouldn't write him off though.

Bangura - nobody has said anything good or bad about his debut

Rogers - was getting grief from fans for not being a CF, before the season even kicked off. Should be judged on what he is a 10 or inverted LW and a young one at that, NOT on failing to be a striker. Unfair abuse, as he has actually done positive things in matches

Engel, yes he's been crucified, but it is a big ask to step up probably 3 leagues in quality.

Greenwood - fans are turning on him already

Gilbert - he's largely been injured and fans have still turned.
Latte Lath - Lots of fans have turned already and decided he will never score goals. They said the same about Akpom mind. He has had a mixed bag so far, but this is a step up from Swiss league. A small step to be honest, and I think he will warm to the job, and score double figures. His movement is too good not to.

Our fans see it as a badge of honour to describe which player will fail and as quickly as possible, then stick to it.

Agree with a lot of this but the Danish Superliga is not National League standard.
