The The - Wolverhampton last night

Those of you going to their future gigs are in for a real treat.
It’s a magical performance from the band.
They play 2 sets.
First half - The new album.
It really does stand up to an indoor venue.
Second half - euphemistically titled ‘the dance half’. It’s just a joy for the fans.

When my favourite songs are played live I sometimes find it quite emotional.
For only the 3rd time in my gigging history I had tears in my eyes last night.

If you are going to Ally Pally tonight 👏👏

They play Chicago on October 25th and I can't find anyone to go with me. Think you've just convinced me to go anyway!

I am going to Ally Pally tonight to see The The.

And I have a spare ticket. It’s paid for. My mate is sadly unable to go at short notice.

If anyone on here would like to go, message me.

That'll be me. I'm expecting something totally different from Melt Banana last night. Fortunately I'm going with a Glaswegian friend who's a similar vintage to me. Really excited.

Is Melt Banana still only the singer and guitarist, or have they got a bass player and drummer again?

Brilliant summary @1finny

Exactly same set and the band were brilliant. I thought Matt Johnson sang better than I’ve heard before.

Playing the new album all the way through was a risk, but worked for me. There are only two songs I don’t like after several listens, sandwiched around Rising Above The Need, which sounded appropriately even more uplifting live.

Like you, the second set was joyous.

The surprise for me was August & September, a track I thought was over-produced and twee on Mind Bomb. Live, it was full of the anguish, pain and power of the lyrics.

I don’t personally know many The The fans, and having been raving about them since I bought Uncertain Smile on 12”, so I thoroughly enjoyed being with hundreds of people who also love the song.

Closing with Giant was a special moment.

As you said, 1finny, “just a joy”!

So pleased you enjoyed it too - thought the encore was just fantastic

So I finally sat down to pen my thoughts only to reopen the thread and see you've all done it for me. Matt Johnson's voice was superb. It maybe doesn't have the range of his youth, but it has a warmth and emotional depth that comes with age, His band were superb, but if I have a criticism (not quite the right word) he does need a female voice in the band. It adds another dimension to the sound. Not that not having a female diminished the gig in any way. Brixton was a better show than Ally Pally. Nothing to do with the band, more the entitled folk of my generation who felt it was ok to chat loudly during the gig. No! If you're going to talk to your mates save yourselves 50 quid and meet in the pub. However the live video screens, which weren't used at Brixton, seemed to fit the nature of the songs being performed. Sound was better at Brixton, but that's the nature of the building's design.
Melt Banana are still a two piece, capable of making a magnificent noise with guitar, voice and (evidently) mobile phone controlled electronics.
Goalscrounger, go and see them by yourself. You won't regret it.
Look forward to crossing paths at Amelia Coburn 1Finny,
