The slow death of the screamer

It probably applies all over the field, players made a career in the past largely out of one specific skill e.g. big defenders/strikers with heading, a midfielder with tackling. If you don't have the other fundamentals you just can't do that anymore
Very true.

This is probably a bit of a transition era (if not the end of). All the kids these days are taught to be brave on the ball and comfortable in possession regardless of position.

You just won't get players coming through anymore without those skills being exceptional.

English football was left behind is this respect for a long time but not anymore. You can see it in the quality of youngsters that have come through, and are still coming through, the England ranks and the improved performance of the England team at tournaments.

Are keepers potentially slightly worse at shot stopping these days?

You need to be able to play a bit now to be a keeper at the top level. Is that coming at the expense of other skills a bit?

There won't be much difference, but if say, the best shot stopper in the world, can't control and pass a football very well, he isn't getting a game in a top league regardless of how good his reflexes are.
Stephen Pears struggled with the back pass rule.

Also a big towering header from a CF is rapidly becoming the thing of the past. Hardly any team crosses there days.

30 passes in and around the box. Just whip the fecker in at pace👍

I think it's to do with the formations, teams tend to play 4-3-3 these days, and working the ball from the keeper to the goal, since Pep came along everyone's trying to copy his style of play.

There is a degree of luck in a screamer compared to a finish inside the box. Players and coaches these days, would rather keep the ball and create chances that have a better scoring rate.

Society has slowly moulded into a culture of control freaks. It's crept into football management too. This will contribute towards it. Wanting to have complete autonomy over everything that every player does on the pitch. It inevitably inhibits players from displaying their true potential, but the argument from them would be that it is a team game and that's the priority
