THE SCENARIOS

You're missing an option, the rosiest of rose tinted binoculars.. we thunder like a freight train through Sheff Utd & 2nd place.. & then rocket up to challenge Burnley.. who lose to Blunderland next, Friday 7th April Boro v Burnley, we win they stumble & limp to the seasons end..

Mogga leads the Mackems to Wembley playoff promotion..

Michael Carrick wins manager of the season - somehow gaining 40 points from the last 10 games, unbelievable Jeff.. & Boro win the Championship title..

If we're going to dream.. dream big..

Come on Boro!!

Millwall away is a hard game. If Sheffield get straight back to winning ways tomorrow then I dont think they will drop enough points regardless of what we do. If they stumble though and we win then it really is game on as they will start to get nervous.
This. They were looking a boss team until Wednesday and though defeat will hurt, you could see they were still good. Millwall's confidence took a knock also so theirs could be a tight game. United might settle for a point, Millwall too.

1. We continue a record breaking run and Sheffield United implode on the final run. Automatic promotion, unbelievable, not sure how we could comprehend such a thing.

2. We continue our automatic promotion form finish on 86 points, beat Norwich over two legs and face Sunderland in the final.. comprehendible, but again would be too good to be true.

3. The playoffs find their natural levels and we do not meet Sunderland in either the semi finals or the finals, Watford and Luton are the order of the day. Nile biting wins see us though and wondering what to do with ourselves.

4. A playoff final loss. Unfair and unjustified.

5. A play off semi final defeat.. anything can happen. Typical boro.

6. We don't make the playoffs.. well. Seemed like it was going to be that way. Disappointing.

If we do win.. what do we do with ourselves? Do we get a trendy new song?

7. We storm the league and on the final day Russia start a Nuclear War🤷‍♂️typical Boro!

*If* this is to be one of those rare occasions where Boro build up our hopes and don't dash them at the last hurdle
In my time as a supporter, our genuine promotion challenges at the end of the season are usually successful.

73/74 Promoted
86/87 Promoted
87/88 Promoted
91/92 Promoted
94/95 Promoted
97/98 Promoted
14/15 Failed
15/16 Promoted

Maybe also the Todd and Pulis play-off losses I suppose. But they never felt like genuine promotion challenges, more like an attempt at a sneaky squeeze through the turnstiles.

I'd include Todd and Pulis' attempts as a playoff finish is still a genuine promotion chance, ie 3 games to navigate for promotion. Even if we don't feel we'll necessarily win them.

Even so, the positive outcomes still outweighs the negative ones, to the tune of 7-3. I think what tends to shape more of a pessimistic view is the plethora of seasons we've finished just outside the top six, ie 7th to 9th.

I think I was looking more at genuine chances of automatic promotion right up to the end of the season.
The Todd & Pulis play-off seasons didn't do that. It was always about reaching the play-offs.
The Karanka play-off season was different as we were looking at top-two right until the last couple of games.
