The Reckoning - BBC Drama on Savile

Of course there is a point to it. I mean it’s your choice to watch or not but there are thousands of dramatisations of disgusting crimes are they all crass? Does society learn anything by studying the most evil of people?
It's my opinion and I believe it's crass. Many victims and their families would agree, this has been proven from reactions to previous similar dramatisations.

Also, suggesting a dramatised TV series is in some way an opportunity to "study" the most evil people is also lame too. But, that's your opinion so good luck and enjoy watching it.

Now then now then let’s not argue
Some would say this was a crass joke..... not me though ;) .

I'm actually quite looking forward to this. The whole thing is fascinating to be fair, the Netflix documentary, the Discovery+ 'Faking It' Special', and now this. I don't exactly know what the dramatisation's raison d'etre is but I'd imagine (and hope) it is simply shining a light on the fact that blokes like that (and there are lots of them) can no longer get away with this stuff in modern society. (Unless you're Prince Andrew).

I will enjoy cheers, Coogan is an under rated actor, and it's obviously a project he has bought into, he likes to shine the spot light on elites that abuse their power, be it Philomena, Greed, or his political activism.

Yes I already understood it was your opinion. Not sure why you feel the need to point that out.....but it's MORE than just your opinion, it's YOUR OPINION PUBLICALLY AIRED, at which point you no longer have the right for your opinion to be free from questioning. If you don't want anyone to question or judge it, don't publicly air it. Cheers, enjoy not watching it.

Never ceases to amaze me how people want to shout their opinions from the rooftops then whine like spoilt brats when anyone engages with it in a way that isn't applauding them for their opinion.

I hope that's the takeaway message. I think it's going to be a bit about the MO of people who groom, the way they manage to shut down any questioning through psychopathic charm, and manipulate people to be an unwitting shield for their activities, allow them to continue their awful ways. It'll certainly be interesting.

Why is it lame? I'd have known nothing of the Grindr killer if I hadn't watched a drama series about it, found it interesting and eye-opening to learn about how he operated and, incredibly, how he was busted by the relatives of the victims rather than the police.

Obviously I'm going into the Savile thing knowing much more about the person, but as you asked what the 'point' of it is, I'd imagine it is an attempt to bring some new perspectives on it, for the greater good? This isn't Netflix, its the BBC, so few opportunities to make profit and every opportunity to mess it up....

Watch the Louis Theroux doc back now knowing what we do and it’s incredibly chilling he’s gloating to the camera it’s really odd.

His words now take on a whole different meaning now that we know.

There’s one line that really sticks out.

“ I can do anything me….

Yes it's chilling. It's a man absolutely sure that he will never ever face justice for his behaviour, sure that he has built a system around him that will protect him. I wonder if he ever felt that the truth would come out after his death? Or if he cared? I think he maybe wanted the truth to come out, so that he could give one last f*(k you to the society he preyed on, to show just how cunning and manipulative he was to everybody else.

I think you are right in that.

Never has hiding in plain sight been more apt.

Someone I worked with regularly, a friend really, told me about Savile and the Stoke Mandeville sometime before it became public, a little later about the BBC stuff. He would never say where it came from. Although there were strong rumours for a long time. Later when it started coming out I asked how the hell he got away with it.
He pointed out he knew and mixed with very powerful people and that he was ‘operating’ in the Historical Child Abuse period, so was protected…he also had suspicions he was also a procurer…a pimp basically. The whole truth about that period never came out, and never will.

I was living in Leeds in the mid/early 90s and was told by a friend/nurse that the staff had all been told that at no point was Saville allowed to be alone with children, or anyone vulnerable. She said the word was that he was an awful, awful person. That it was an open secret amongst staff, and that everyone took it in turns to keep an eye on him when he was in the building.

This was about 94 maybe. People in positions to do something knew, but did nothing.

I think its more that people always suspected something, but you can't actually do much purely on suspicion, until someone formally complains and puts themselves in the firing line for a rebuttal.
