The reason people are stocking up is

Our Tesco is rationing items like hand sanitiser to 5 bottles per person.

The ironic thing about that stuff is that it's just as effective to use soap and water, or washing up liquid even, which is £££ less.
What really winds me up about the hand sanitiser thing is that if you buy loads of it, and others can’t, then THEY will spread the disease, Making it much worse.

Reports now that scumbags are walking into hospitals and taking the hand sanitiser off the walls. What a thin level of morality exists in today’s society. It’s very depressing.

I have stockpiled a bit of extra food but I have been doing it for weeks just a few bits at a time ( maybe a fivers worth extra on the weekly shop)

I was in B and M Coulby yesterday needing some lightbulbs and a jar of coffee as I had ran out and spent half an hour in the bloody queue.

In that time I saw one member of staff filling shelves of tinned veg putting full cases out and then see them cleared by one person as soon as he let go.

I also saw two or three women struggling to carry 5 and 6 packs or 9 toilet rolls.

I don’t mind stocking up and do think it’s a good idea just doing a bit at a time but some people are literally off their t*ts

The hand sanitiser situation is insane, surgeries, schools and even hospitals are facing a four to six week delivery lead time, my local doctors surgery has stopped face to face appointments and only dealing with people via the telephone, this will have a knock on effect as people with other health issues will not be seen or properly diagnosed.

Supermarkets won't ration as they are currently quids in, yes people are **** holes and perhaps more government intervention is required, but equally the bosses of the supermarkets have to take responsibility, I mean a poxy letter saying please don't buy as much as you are doing is hardly going to stop people is it???

What utter rubbish - have you any idea what our colleagues have to put up with trying to get people to stick to the limits set? They get dogs abuse. People complain about customers to the staff in the store - they do nowt about it themselves.
The grocery industry is doing a brilliant job at this stage trying to get stuff on the shelf.
The behaviour of 000s of people is the issue combined with the many more who are prepared to pass the responsibility onto someone on minimum wage.

It shouldn't be up to staff, a limit can be set on the EPOS device, (exactly the same as what is done with medicines) and anybody abusing members of staff should be ejected from the supermarket (every supermarket I go in now has security). So why has this not been done???

Whilst I agree that rationing should be introduced, and I haven't 'stocked up' on anything yet - just what do people expect to happen in a global pandemic? I know its not exactly like in the movies but surely some level of societal breakdown must be on the cards? Its alright calling everyone a selfish **** but people are reacting to a situation, and not everyone will react with textbook placidity.

As soon as my mum heard people were panic buying and stocking up she went out and...

...did panic buying and stocking up

EPOS controls have been set up in most.
Smaller independent stores don’t have security neither do most convenience stores.
Whatever controls you set up staff are getting abused, managers are being called to tills and some customers are taking it further and complaining formally.

Most of food retail is working co-operatively here, for the first time that I can remember, and the message is consistent.
It is easy to criticise and, sadly, in my view people like you are happy to do so.

I'm sorry Finny but in my experience EPOS controls haven't been set up, they are relying on customers doing the right thing and obeying the notices that are dotted around the store and then expecting the staff to deal with it. Believe me I am not criticising front line staff, they are doing an amazing job in the face of ridiculous intimidation and having done that job for nearly 15 years when everything was fine I know how stressful it can be.
What I am criticising is the way the large chain supermarkerts have reacted and in my opinion could have dealt with the whole situation quicker and better.

We will have to agree to disagree. These are unprecedented times and, in general, the industry has acted in good faith and pretty quickly. I think two of the national chains have sought PR gain our of this which is a bit shiit.
Ref EPOS - I may have over egged it. Sainsburys have def set up some EPOS controls so I assumed others followed suit. Smaller retailers and C stores certainly haven't.

These are indeed unprecedented times.
The ironic thing is my local farm shop has plenty of fresh meat and my greengrocer has plenty of fresh fruit and veg and even my local convenience store (Nisa) has plenty of stock (with the exception of hand soap), so maybe the community spirit is still alive and well in some places.

Ask one of the grocery staff when they next get a delivery from the distribution centre and plan to return to the shop the following day once shelves are restocked. You need enough to last a couple of weeks if you're asked to self-isolate, but otherwise grocery deliveries will continue as normal.

There's little point in rationing people. If the stores impose rationing they're effectively reinforcing the panic. The best thing they could do is publish the next delivery date of essential items so those who find the shelves empty know when to return. Once people realise there's no shortages they'll resume normal behaviour.

I think the government are expecting staff shortages of around 20% when people are asked to self-isolate (under normal circumstances the majority would just go to work with the infection), but that's just like normal in July and August.

To anyone who is hording or bulk buying toilet paper I would politely ask them to stop doing so and to allow others who haven't been selfish to actually buy a packet. If the measure of a society is how it treats its fellow citizens then we are failing already.

If my polite request falls on deaf ears then I hope you get the worst stomach bug imaginable and **** what is left of your brains out.

Thanks for understanding.

TBF Small Town if it is Ambridge the Susan Carter effect, even if she is on holiday is enough to stop people like me using the damn shop
I couldn't possibly say, but all I know I'm staying well clear Felpersham as it's manic down there!!!
