The penalty.

How come Howson didn’t take it like the Southampton game? Could have been costly if the rebound hadn’t gone in. Lathe took one the other night in the Cup. Do they just decide during the match who takes it?

Doesn’t seem like there is much of a plan does there ?
Obviously howson has let a striker go get the ball for a penalty which is understandable and how I see what happened without even questioning it and rightly so however, if Coburn is going to step up and take the responsibility for a penalty then he needs to have more conviction, confidence and a real plan for what he is going to do.
Like Harry Kane.
kane misses the odd one but my god, he goes for corners and pace on the penalty like he ain’t afraid of scoring or missing.

Coburn is a good player and finisher but a penalty is a psychological battle with yourself and the keeper so different to being in front of goal with a chance, you get more time to think about a penalty which is sometimes not a good thing for a striker who’s normal skill set is to work off instinct.
Taking a penalty requires guts and plenty of thought as to what you are going to do and a successful long term penalty taker is someone who DOESNT wait for the keeper to move (like lath did versus Exeter) but takes the initiative and goes for it irrespective of what the keeper chooses to do.

Just my thoughts as I took penalties and you have to have a plan IMHO

Yakubu had a great penalty record for us. He used to stroll up and wait for the keeper to move. Against Bristol City, their keeper just stood still and Yakubu chipped it into his arms! He then missed another in the shootout. Before that his record was 17 scored out of 18! We won’t mention who scored the winning penalty!

Surprised we don’t seem to have a designated penalty taker. It was Akpom last season wasn’t it and he was hardly convincing either.

I think after the Southampton game Howson said in his interview that he was speaking to Grant before the match about taking a penalty if we got one. That game was more of a captain's responsibility since we were on such a bad run he wanted to show leadership.

Some great run- ups,proper penalties

Im sure Coburn was the nominated taker, otherwise Howson would've taken it. Why you assume there's no plan i have no idea

Yep.

Think a similar thing happened to Van Nisterlooy at Man United. Difference was he just had the knack of almost curling into the side of the net to the keepers right. Pretty much every single time. Was pretty much unsaveable if a keeper started from the middle of the goal.

That was until keepers started working out they needed to fully commit to that side and cover up to the post. Think his record suffered a bit after that as he then had to vary it and soon as you start second guessing yourself errors creep in.

It was a bit of a mess. It looked like Greenwood wanted but Coburn got the ball had a chat with greenwood and pointed to the bench

yes it looked like Greenwood tried to take the ball of Josh but he wouldn't have any of it it. He didn't look confident taking it , maybe someone will ask Carrick at a future presser if there's a designated taker

Coburn needs to be like Harry Kane?

I'm sure he'll sort that next match and be England's record goal scorer in no time

I think Forss is probably our best.
Latte Lath would have wanted it if he was on.

I can understand Howson taking responsibility Vs Southampton. On the whole I want strikers to want to take them though. Maybe it's not Coburn's strength though.

Well if josh pointed to the bench he was probably pointing out that he was the assigned taker.
The hierachy last season was clearly Forss then Akpom. Howson got gives the role vs Southampton. So there's no reason to think Josh wasn’t assigned the job yesterday
