The National Farmers' Union (NFU) said they need up to 70,000 fruit and vegetable pickers

Plane loads of workers coming from Romania today. Hopefully they are paid danger money after leaving a country that seems to have controlled coronavirus well.

Im sure the Tories on here will be falling over themselves to help with the countrys food production, remember, sovereignty, control etc blah blah kick em out.

Not only did they run the NHS into the floor and lots of people died due lack of drugs or funds we now have this nightmare scenario. We told them we needed to bolster our manufacturing base " no we can get it from China for 2 bob"
They can now see what we were talking about for year after year.

Of course they are badly needed because they will only pay the absolute minimum and they won't accept people driving in. They want them living on site so they can claim back half of the pittance they pay in "accommodation" costs. They want people who can't speak the language and don't know the system so they won't get reported for breaking every rule in the book.

A predictable UKIP style cynical take on things. i don't normally have huge sympathy for farmers but their businesses are under as much stress as anyone else and if they desperately need workers that they can’t get here then it’s a necessary move. These people work their socks off.

Their days are now done CD, they really spouted rwnj garbage for year after year, we did tell them.

Ive a feeling they may not give their 2 bob thoughts so freely now, for some reason these awful dimwits consider themselves a cut above.....kin ell, makes you laugh.

Got to laugh at the faux outrage

There’s a pandemic going on if no one had realised. Recruitment in the normal sense of the word isn’t happening so don’t bleat on about inactive workers etc. In normal situation these jobs could easily be filled by people on benefits within travel distance and be paid a normal wage for doing so. What the pro remain brigade support on here which was shown by someone complaining about their cleaning prices going up is EU workers are good as long as they are paid pittance to keep costs down otherwise people will have to pay more.

You’d have thought those in favour of a fairer society would bd happy to pay more so the poorest receive a fair pay packet

Spent 10 years posting to people like you saying we are running the NHS down, the education system down and the manufacturing base down. You deserve everything thats coming to you.

It was on the BBC that I caught this story.

What's the DWP distance / time that someone is expected to travel to work? A plane journey seems to exceed that.

There are plenty of cash in hand building workers/tradesmen around currently. No cash in hand strawberry pickers though?

It’s 90 mins by car, bike, public transport or walking. As people from outside can’t claim benefit for ; months that doesn’t apply to this.

Have to ask in this time of national emergency when supermarkets and government departments are hiring people on a whim on or above national minimum wage do the farmers find it more effective to fly 1000 Romanians in. Could have advertised that to people in the local area, guarenteed safety with social distance etc. Oh no we’ll fly 1000 Romanians in.. cheaper by any chance?

Everyone wants fairness until it hits them in the pocket. Pay an extra quid for your strawberries and we don't have to import and exploit people to live in shipping containers and taking home half the minimum wage but it's all great because it's triple what they'd get in Romania.

I apologise for being against the exploitation of workers, no matter what their nationality, just so I can get some cheap fruit.

If they can't afford to operate by paying a fair wage for work in adequate conditions then the business model doesn't work.

Oh forget. The Guardian again! 😆
Well, it's hardly likey to be endorsed by the Mail is it? Not after spending years complaining about foreigners taking our jobs and then finding out that when you get rid of the foreigners there is no one to pick the crops. Brixiteers could volunteer to pick them. I don't understand why there is not a flood of applications from them.

So, going by Cooper Borisette logic, it's easier to fly people from a foreign country during a pandemic than it is to get people already in the country and "economically inactive" to the farms to work.

I'd love to know how that works. Maybe he can explain?
