The Lenihan deal shows Wilder is the right man for the Boro job

It might have been unaddressed for years but I can't see any reason to think - then or now - that it's a priority. There are far greater issues than another centre back.
I would say one of those issues is a lack of leadership. This team has had a weakness to it for years, right back since Pulis left. We've needed a captain to lead things since Leadbitter left. Hopefully Lenihan can address that. And let's be honest, he's an upgarde on what we currently have.

He's coming to play, probably to captain, and not just pad out the squad like a lot of signings we've made in the recent past have.

It has to be Fry, yeah.

Fry won’t want to sit on the bench either though. Think he might be out the door.

He could be one of the “end of the road” players that wilder mentioned after the Preston game

Upgrade in what sense? 9 yellow cards and a red last season. He'll be sitting in the stand almost as often as Crooks. Blackburn offered him a year extension on his deal but no more. I'm not sure why Boro would offer him a 4 year deal because he'll have no resale value at 33.

He might turn out to be a good signing but again it seems me that the real priorities have not been addressed so far, while the budget is now reduced a bit.

He's an aggressive player, 56 yellows in 220 games. He'll miss 3-5 games through suspension, no doubt.

Resale value? He's a free transfer, so it's kind of irrelevant, if we sold him after 2 or 3years for 2mill we'd make a 2mill profit, which would probably pay for his 3 years of wages to be honest. It's a low risk, no brainer, financially.

We aren't good enough at CB, we lack leadership, organisation and strength he brings all that

Some decent stats there, especially defensively.
His passing obviously needs to improve.

But for a free transfer, then signing Blackburn's captain at 28 years old seems like very good business to me.

The lack of leadership in the team has been obvious for ages, and was absolutely clear at the business end of the season. When we needed people to step up, nobody did. Howson maybe. But nobody is breaking their neck to head the ball out, organise the lines and their own box, put the bodies in the way of shots, rough up the opposition. We're too nice IMO. It needed to be addressed and I think Lenihan brings that to the team. He's a better central defender than McNair and more commanding and physical than the other two. To my mind the three who played last season should be worried about their places in the team, not Lenihan.

This makes no sense. He's a free transfer and he's on low wages, so he's now on low wages for the next 4 years...
If he's rubbish (which I don't think he will be), we lose a max of £3 million (educated guess) in wages, and can still sell whenever we want for a small profit.
If he's really good, he's stuck on a 4 year contract, his value increases because of the contract length, and he can't demand more money for 4 years.

He will also be 32 and 3 months when the contract ends not 33, hardly ancient for a centre half.

He missed one match through suspension all season.
That was the red card for a second yellow.

He's missed 7 league matches through suspension in his entire career.

Not much different to the likes of Ben Gibson and McNair.

Only missed 3-4 matches through injury in the past 2 years too.

Those "Passes to Final 1/3" stats suggest a hell of a lot of old school biffs.

Memories of Juninho gazing forlornly as Pearson sends yet another speculative punt flying out for a throw in...

And yet we have just signed one. Do you not see how important a left footed CB is. We tried Fry their last season and he was terrible. McNair likewise was really poor playing LS. He was constantly getting turned and wrong footed and ended up giving silly free kicks away in dangerous postions. Get square pegs for square hold not round ones.

You do this every season. Every position the manager feels need strengthening is a priority

He looks a solid addition.

NW and CW have both hinted we are a bit too nice and a bit too laid back relative to some other teams. I know at times we don't challenge the officials as much as other teams, sometimes we have let in goals where we have lost 50/50 challenges in key areas that I thought say Mogga and Pally would never have lost as Championship defenders.

On things we could do better I still think we are poor at throw ins, particularly in the oppositions half, we don't seem to utilise quick forward throws and exploit the fact that you can't be offside from a throw.

Other improvement 40% of goals come from set pieces, but for us it seemed much fewer goals from set pieces. Its something we need to improve.
