The Isaac Wilson up for sale

The price of drinks has pretty much doubled over the last decade whereas disposable income has decreased. It's no surprise that the younger generation are finding alterative ways of socialising.

The young are doing sports and either not drinking or going to cocktail bars instead of dusty old man pubs for expensive ale.

I agree about the sports, particularly gyms, though nowhere near as many playing football or cricket in their 20's than when I was a youngster, though the local Asian community are bailing out many cricket clubs.

I've tried quite a few of the cocktail bars, they're less clean than the average boozer, and far more expensive.

More of the youngsters that I know are more inclined to go out for a meal than pop to the pub. It's why there are so many pubs that are basically restaurants today, a number of them mentioned on here. They're spending more on fewer nights out.

The pubs and clubs in the less well off areas are closing, as we're seeing, due to the culture shift.

I definitely agree with this. In my teens and early twenties I’d be regularly out 3-4 times a week.

I’d often take £15 with me to the linny. That’d be enough for 5-6 pints and a pizza from Romano’s on the way home.

Aside from that we’d be out at least 2 of 4 nights Thursday - Sunday.

We used to some pre drinking round each others houses but that was to stretch the amount of possible nights out. Back then there was a lot of commitment to a sesh though and it was still pretty affordable even on rubbish money 😄

How times have changed.

Cocktail bars are more expensive, but you don't go several times a week like those of a certain age did. Be interested to hear which cocktail bars you've visited that you have found to be less clean than places like Isaacs? I've visited pretty much all the local ones and dozens around the country and can only think of one or two I've ever visited that have been less stale and dusty than places like that.

Its not even just young people. I'd much rather have people over my house and in the garden than sit in a boozer surrounded by lushes and pay £5-6 a pint of cider and dread going to the bog because its covered in ****.

Sounds like my era. If my bank balance stretched far enough I'd even get in the crown on a Monday night with a tenner. Pound a pint.

Another factor. A lot of people of invested in gardens and home bars recently. Especially through Covid. Socialising habits have changed.

What a time to be a landscaper by the way

Sounds it!

Back then my budget used to be worked out in terms of how many nights out that money would get me - lack of responsibilities obviously! 😂

When I started full time work my mate used to get paid month end and I was mid month so we’d always pay for each others nights towards the end of a pay cycle. Worked out well!

I used to love the Crown on a Sunday. Pop to walkabout for the footy, Southfield after with a yellow card for cheap pints. Then get a bottle of wine or two in the Crown for £6 to really finish the night (and me) off. Couldn’t do it these days! 😆

I don't know how some places keep going.

I was out in Norton on a Saturday afternoon/evening for the first time in years and although there were people about - it was hardly bouncing.

It will be sad when pub culure dies - it's well on the way.

You've been going into some strange pubs. No wonder you stay in.

Cocktail bars in Norton, Stockton and over the Boro, no idea what they were called , I was with a younger crowd.

Low prices at the supermarkets mean if the young do want to drink then they can get plenty at a reasonable price and take it back home with their friends and watch Netflix etc...
Even the supermarket prices are starting to go up quite a bit now. But, I can still get 12 bottles for the price of the taxi to the pub alone

We're talking about pubs closing down or for sale like Isaac Wilson. Sounds more like you're going to some strange cocktail bars, no wonder your pubs are closing.

It’s quality not quantity for me. I’d rather spend a bit extra on some nice IPA’s or Stouts etc. so do some beer shopping online from breweries.

Beer hawk used to have some good combo deals too.

If I want a bit of a binge drink I just crack open the rum, gin or whisky! 😆

Prices have started to put me off recent honestly, I’ve been going out regularly for 9/10 years. Price of a Carling in my local is the same price a peroni was pre Covid.

I earn decent money but it’s becoming a luxury. To be fair issacs is the exception food and drink is dirt cheap. Id say drinks are around 40-50% cheaper than most pubs. A match day drinking session in there I don’t worry about breaking the bank. Hope issacs can keep similar prices if it gets taken over.

The Issac Wilson used to be a popular pub but times have obviously changed. It's not necessarily a recent thing, it's been happening for well over a decade with plenty of local and community type pubs disappearing. You only have to visit pubs near universities to see how much things have changed. The same goes for student union bars.

With regards to drinking at home or going to someone's house, it's nothing like going to a decent pub. It just isn't comparable. Barring a glass of wine with a meal or a glass of something if someone calls round, not a great fan of alcohol in homes. You'd rather be in a pub.

With regards to London, I can't understand that business model for pubs. Why not just convert them into flats?

Don't go to a lot of pubs in Boro as all they have is IPAs. Disgusting stuff. Hardly anywhere does a decent bitter. End up drinking cider in Boro and that's not great either.

I'll admit, I used to drink in Isaacs a lot when I lived in Boro because of the cheap drinks when it was a Wetherspoon's, same as Lloyds.

Then I realised what an utter chunt Tim Martin is, and how his business model absolutely destroys the independent pub trade, and I got into craft beer and now I only support micro breweries taprooms and micropubs, along with ordering craft beer online.
