The Hundred

Is anyone else not feeling this, players playing for cities rather than counties, limits on star players so root playing for notts, bairstow for wales? batsmen are batters, wickets are outs, 10 ball overs. why play a domestic format that isn’t replicated in internationals it’s not like this is going to take t20s place.

Why is there a need for it, what’s wrong with the t20 blast, going the same way as football, total greed and over saturation of the product.

What’s wrong with the T20 Blast is it’s been going for 20 years nearly and isn’t profitable enough to keep the 18 counties afloat. It doesn’t attract a global audience like the IPL or Big Bash and England is being left behind. Is that “greed” or is it just about trying to compete?

The idea is to try and attract a new audience to domestic cricket so that it doesn’t die completely. I appreciate not everyone “gets it” but the chances are that if you’re already a fan of county cricket it isn’t aimed at you.

It was announced with a younger audience in mind. Dont regard it as cricket more a new sport. Weren't they banning alcohol at the grounds too for these games.

Not sure about alcohol, but I know it’s aimed at kids and families rather than the “after-work” crowd.

But in some ways you’re right it is a variation on cricket designed to generate enough funds to keep actual cricket afloat. A lot of the counties are in desperate trouble and once they start falling there is no one to take their place.

Sky have paid a fortune for the rights and the tickets are selling like hot cakes so it’s a tough one to argue isn’t going to serve its purpose.

Many would argue that the shorter formats are what is killing the longer game. There is already talks of shortening the test game to four days rather than 5.

Do we really need more cricket? I'm a massive cricket fan and watch Test match / T20 and 50 over.

I even watch bits of IPL and big bash (depending who's on show). I just simply don't see the need or demand for the 100. We have so much cricket as it is.

Also the actual England cricket schedule is horrific. I'm all for moaning about footballers who complain about 2 games a week. The cricketers go away for months on end effecting metal health and in hot climates. Also the bowlers body's are under real strain.

I just don't see any need for more cricket. I think it's been marketed as a family friendly affair and a 'nice day out'. I doubt I'll watch any of it.

The proof will be in the ticket sales. If the grounds are empty then it has to be beamed a failure. That or its a sell out and its much needed revenue for county clubs who must have lost a fortune.

It was talked about and rejected.

Yeah maybe shorter formats are “killing” the game but then without T20 do you think global cricket would be better off or worse now?

Tickets are already selling out. The counties were ****ed way before the pandemic. It’s needed now more than ever.

They had two choices. Do away with T20 Blast and create a glitzy T20 competition, OR, keep the T20 Blast and build a separate, glitzy short form competition. The latter is the option they’ve gone with. I think it’s probably the right one. Not as if you can’t still watch the T20 Blast, and obviously people can just ignore the 100 if they choose.

So who is it aimed at and why would this attract them in a way that the 20 over game doesn't?

Daily Mail is sticking the boot in.

In a scathing article, the Mail’s Paul Newman wrote: “Truly, it is difficult to remember a time when even the ECB were in as big a mess as this. It is as if every lover of cricket in this country is being disregarded in a bonkers attempt to locate a ‘new’ audience. One that does not like cricket. And the ECB’s attempts to get their message across have been laughable.

“The comments make Graves’s position untenable. He should resign now and let people who know what they are doing sort out the mess that The Hundred threatens to create.”

Yes I thought the difference was that in banning sale of alcohol at these games mums and dads could take their kids to enjoy the sport free from the drinking party atmosphere that T20 has become? That was the original pitch anyway.

So who is it aimed at and why would this attract them in a way that the 20 over game doesn't?
Sky have paid a lot of money for the rights and the grounds are selling out, the funds are being shared out amongst all 18 counties.

The premise of the competition is that every game will be an event, much like the IPL, and the idea being that you watch all of them. There won’t be 6 games going on at once, with the majority of players lesser known county players. Most squads are full of internationals.

I can only assume it’s aimed at youngsters, and especially those who don’t particularly identity with a particular county and are usually only interested in England or the “Sky Sports” cricket offering. Like it or not though, domestic cricket needs Sky’s money just now.

I don't particularly think any sport needs Sky's money, as with football it will be frittered away on the elite.

Decentralising the county game would take the sport around the country more if they're looking to attract families who can't travel to matches.

Look at our two counties for instance, Yorkshire could play limited overs games across the old county, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Sheffield etc, Durham to Stockton, Darlington, Sunderland, Gateshead etc.

I can't disagree with them wanting to get rid of the louts.

I'll be honest, I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a relative newcomer to the game but have absolutely fallen in love with it over the last couple of years (enjoying all formats). Even at the expense of footy, which is something I'd never thought I'd say!

The Hundred is definitely targeted at a different audience but my understanding is that tickets are selling very well. We're booked up for Birmingham Nottingham at Edgbaston, should be some decent players involved (Root, Williamson, Malan, Hales, Ali, Woakes etc). Decent value as well - think we paid £30 quid each.

Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding, if it's garbage I won't go again.
