The Goalkeeping Situation

We're not exactly struggling to find a keeper but I really hope now all they neysayers that constantly slagged off Steffen all season realise we might not be improving on him?
We've been linked to 3 names
Karl Darlow who's demands have become ecessive.
Seny Dieng who the Gazette are claiming talks have broken down with (Smoke and Mirrors?)
Tom Glover who on the face of it doesn't seem inspiring and I've seen the fan base already saying they don't mind him coming in as long as he's 3rd choice.

What do we do?
Who's your ideal realistic keeper?

For me I think we have to go for solid.
Darlow and Dieng were keepers I could get behind, Glover I'm not so sure.
I'd like to see us maybe either go for Marek Rodak or Ethan Hovarth.

If it is to be Glover I think I'll be rooting for Sol Brynn to be number one, Glover is only 2 years older and it just seems a bit to much of a step down from Steffen if he is to be the one

I think Darlow or Dieng would have been decent. Don't know anything about Glover, but will give him a chance. I had hoped we'd be looking at more of a household name though, with a bit of championship experience. There's plenty of keepers out there who will be wanting game time and available. We don't want to end up with another Joe Lumley! The keeper position isn't just about shot stopping and hoofing it up the pitch these days and they are much more vital to how the team plays. For me we have to get this one right and hopefully Glover won't just be a cheap option.

In saying that, I hadn't heard of Alex Gilbert of Rav van den Berg until a few days ago and am quite excited about both of them, so hopefully Glover could be the same. The last Glover we had was awesome!

My first choice would be Zack Steffen. I've got to say though the prospect of Glover worries me slightly. If we are serious about promotion I think we need to be bringing in more experienced players with more of a proven track record. I am all for looking at younger players with potential high ceilings but for a successful promotion campaign we need more than the players we are linked with. I have full faith in the club though to bring the right players in.

I would back Glover of course but for him to come in as no 1 feels a huge risk and could backfire. Obviously due diligence has been done but still, new league, step up. Will be tough.

I would prefer a more established keeper aswell.

Definitely working our way down a list.

Darlow would have been my first choice. Until I read they wanted 5mil and almost certainly the highest paid in the linked list. I imagine financially not even a option.

Dieng is interesting. Two very good seasons. The negativity from qpr fans is based on last season. 126 appearances in the last 3 years. He's more than experienced at this level.

I'm not remotely convinced by this Glover. Clearly we know absolutely nothing about him. Yet he's been playing in Australia. Also worse the 'reviews' from his fanbase are hardly positive. That's coming from fans of a pretty poor league. Hardly filling me with confidence 😂

It's things like this that may just see someone get a chance and be the find of the season. Just look at Akpom and Hackney. We were activity looking for a forward and CM (Geoff fecking Hendrick).

So maybe out of necessity the likes of Roberts or Brynn will stake a claim.

We might not be improving on anyone never mind Steffen. I don’t see any improvement on any our big players from last season so far. Hope is fine, but there is no evidence as yet. The names we expect to be coming in this week are all untried and untested in our league, we have no idea if they will hit the ground running to the desired level or may need time to develop.

As for the goalkeeping question I gave my view on the Payero thread. There are experienced championship keepers we could enquire about whose contracts are almost up, Glover as a No 1 is too big a risk for me, he may turn out to be the next Schwarzer or the new Lumley.

Could be quite a hard position to fill, particularly with someone experienced at this level or higher.

I think them being good with their feet is a non negotiable for Carrick which probably rules out Roberts getting much of a chance. Not sure about Brynn's ability in that area?

We're clearly looking wider than just the UK though. Maybe someone elsewhere in Europe that fits the bill.

Glover must be being brought in more as back up surely? Wouldn't be surprised if it was another loan from a prem club later in the window for our number 1.

I'm all for Sol Brynn, if we couldn't get an absolute top draw keeper for this level.

Sol's attributes fit Carrick's style, and we know the ball playing ability is the main driver in how he judges the keepers. I'd like to see the budget prioritised for some of the outfielder positions we are lacking

£3.5m for Dieng or £0 for this younger guy. No brainer with our current philosophy. His highlights reel on youtube shows what he can do. Time will tell if he’s successful. I hope very much he is and will get my backing, as Steffen did even after some of the gaffs he made. I think this is going to be one of those ‘told you so threads’ that will be dug up once he makes a mistake

Having watched Glover first hand at Melbourne City for a few seasons, I like him as a keeper. I don't think he has any glaring weaknesses but I was somewhat surprised that he was so heavily linked with us. If he does come I'd expect it as number 2 to start with.

Having said that, is Aussies do have a knack of producing top goal keepers locally that have great careers abroad so I'm optimistic he will develop.

No chance we were paying 3.5 for Dieng.

Lets be honest, Steffan isn't coming back, we need to exclude him from discussions. Darlow is also too expensive, so he won't be coming.

I would take Dieng in a heartbeat though, always been impressed with him.

Don't know too much about Glover, but reading the reviews of those who do makes me slightly worried if he is indeed coming in as number 1.

Steffen has left the club and is not coming back, his financial package would cripple us.
Of the three keepers we are linked with, Darlow would have been the best choice, but again his financial package would be too high.
I would like to give Sol a chance, and use whatever budget we have on other areas of the pitch.

Sol Brynn needs game time.. he might have to go back out on loan.

I can see clubs looking to bring in Liam Roberts..

1 Seny Dieng
13 Tom Glover

Fact

56 goals conceded was too many for me. Highest number conceded amongst the top 9 teams in the Championship.

Opinions

Now I know there lots of reasons for this, but the quality of goalkeeping and his relationship with the players defending must be one of the major factors.

Others might be able to break down why we conceded 56 in more detail which would be useful.

This 56 number has to reduce if we want to be promoted.

I do think Steffan improved in the last 3 months and to me he is above average Championship keeper on the form of the last 3 months, but he did not feel like a top 3 keeper, say i would put Darren Randolph ahead of him who conceded 45 goals in 2017/18 and 41 goals in 2018/19.
