The end?

My utterly befuddlesd and jet-lagged pal must be running on fumes now. Anyway, this was the latest in messenger.

"It was Russian KH-101 missiles according to the Poles. They are readying military units (unspecified what and which)."

But why when they are getting their backsides well and truly kicked, retreating into Crimea, starting the surrender talks would they now fire missiles deliberately into a village in Poland? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Without knowing much but the basics on the conflict, is this likely to end in all out war?

Just heard an American diplomat on the radio and he was playing down the incident. He said when you look at the area hit (a small farming community in Poland) it doesn't look like a deliberate strike from the Russians, basically NATO aren't going to start WW3 over a mistake.

He said that Russia will have to explain what happened and explain how they are going to prevent a similar situation happening in the future.

He might be wrong and I might be wrong but I don't think this is going to be solved by a military response.

Well, there has been this war for 8 years or so. I don't think ww3 erupts here.... could be wrong. anyway the lad must be on his last legs now but....

"Polands president is now on the phone with Biden. This is the second call in a couple of hours. Poland raised military alert in all of Poland and are deploying units."

If it is, then this is an interesting read from the magnificent Bellingcat.

It seems these missiles might not be as accurate as the Russians claim or else there are going to be some worried people following this incredible work.

It was a bit strange seeing Zelensky headlining on the bbc news tonight saying ‘we will have to respond’ to the missiles entering Poland.

His own country is 20% occupied by a foreign army, Kiev is in darkness with key power infrastructure taken out, millions of Ukraine citizens displaced from their homes, thousands dead, cities blasted apart…etc

But it takes 2 missiles into Poland to get him top billing in a call for action on a western media channel…

Biden and Poland casting doubt that the missile came from Russia, which means that it didn't.
Phew.
But it just demonstrates the fragility of it all.

You tend to think, if it was RF missles , they didn't expect them to land in Poland - they can't defend one front, never mind opening a second one.

They seem to be comprehensively defeated in Ukraine. Why would the West escalate things by pushing the RF harder militarily. If that caused the RF to enter an existential crisis, then they've already stated that would be a nuclear red line.

We need to win the peace.

BTW is Putin's invasion of Ukraine any more or less wrong then the UK and US invading Iraq for oil using an out and out lie as an excuse?

I'm not suggesting that's an excuse but to the rest of the world I can understand how they might think we're hypocritical c0cks.

It’s a good question I think and one the belligerent states in Iraq should have an answer for.

Firstly I believe the war in Ukraine is the death throes of aggressive, nation collecting European imperialism, in this case by Russia, which under various guises has taken countries, land and people under its direct control, or into its sphere of influence. Yes, there are remnants of various European empires, but the overt war mongering, sabre rattling and perceived superiority began to die out for most European countries in the wake of WW2 through the 20th century - Russia, however, lost much of its empire in 1991 but still retained a belief of Russian superiority and domination towards its lesser neighbours, they should be grateful for Russian culture and language and accept Russian hegemony.

With Iraq I think a lot depends on your beliefs already - do you believe in American imperialism? Was there any evidence of WMD’s, or was it a complete fabrication? If so, who by and why? Was it just a grab for oil? Unless someone believes outright Kremlin lies, then Zelensky is no Saddam and Ukraine is not nazi infested. But neither was Iraq, the Bin Laden and Al Queda links were very shaky even if there’s little doubt Saddam and co were nasty pieces of work. There were other murderous regimes at that time that weren’t removed - so oil then? Maybe, it wouldn’t surprise me, but I don’t believe everyone was motivated by that, some clearly believed Iraq posed a wider danger that now we know wasn’t true. So, to conclude on Iraq, I feel it’s very murky getting to the truth, but it could very well have been an illegal war for immoral reasons that several figures should answer for, but unlike Ukraine I can’t be totally sure.

I’m not wedded to what I’ve written above on Iraq as I’m far from an expert, so happy for anyone to question it or provide more information. Even if Iraq was totally wrong, we are still right today to call out Putin’s imperialist and nationalistic actions, but we would have to accept being accused of hypocrisy too.

They probably think that anyway.

But the world (bar the usual suspects) are pretty United in the condemnation of Russia for the invasion. I'm sure plenty of other countries could be accused of hypocrisy too. Pretty clear that Russia is in the wrong on this one. Hypocritical or not, most of the world surely has no problem with the UK, US and co. response this time.
