Bit disappointed to see Xi is attending.
So Starmer has basically fecked us up completely with Europe by sucking Trump's weener. Now the EU are going to impose tarrifs on the UK to protect their internal market from US price dumping in the UK. GS is fuming.... as is UVDL by all accounts.

I would have thought under the current circumstances (trump, Ukraine, Putin) being closer to the EU would be best for the UK.

I would like to think the same but the government must have a different view point that we don't fully understand. Are the EU working on their own deal?

Regardless of any deal whether it be with EU or USA we are still an integral part of the European defence structure.
For the UK to do a trade deal with the USA does de-risk us from future US-Euro trade deals.. and im not saying this is my preferred option.

To be fair I think I would take that, in a trade sense, if being in the EU wasn't an option. We're not going to do well going alone, and I think I could put up with Trump for a few years for the benefit which should come after he's gone. Don't want their healthcare system and gun laws mind, we would probably end up the most "left" sate they have, might have more pro's than cons.
Would still much rather be with the EU though, every day of the week.
According to the BBC, this isn't really a trade deal at all. Just a (possibly temporary) reduction in some of the tariffs.

According to GS, the EU has retaliated but against the US. Plus, no US products will be permitted into Europe via the UK.

Indeed, lot on his plate, doesn't need extra stress..
Actually the stop off is on his way to the next inspection. So not too terrible. And he thinks it's a painful, rather than serious condition.
