The end?

Just seen snippets from Putins speech he’s giving today. The whole room look as interested as I used to look in maths at school.
If you are old enough to have watched the old Soviet leaders speak to the nation, like that, including the choreographed applause.

Imagine if you also knew that the teacher was likely a "supply teacher" dressed up to look like your maths teacher.

Royal United Services Institute - Ukraine

Not sure if this works. RUSI have set up a dedicated site for articles etc about Ukraine. Most of the pieces are in the public domain, a few are members only.

A recent podcast:

Russia's long war against Ukraine

If you don't know the institute.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is the world’s oldest and the UK’s leading defence and security think tank. Our mission is to inform, influence and enhance public debate to help build a safer and more stable world.

I must admit to being quite surprised at Macron's comments about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine.
What is the motivation? Its obviously quite threatening and provocative.

There's a broader context (the EU...and friends like us... realising that it has to ensure its own security now that the US is having a meltdown) and the European forces will be used to police borders, the skies over Ukraine and the western black sea, where they'll be ensuring the safety of shipping, demining etc. Unfortunately, while the current regime is in charge in Russia, there is an ongoing threat, beyond Ukraine: Baltic states, Moldova, Suwalki Gap and the arctic (Svalbard). A coalition of European states under the JEDI umbrella have decided to act and be ready. They will also train Ukrainian forces in the NATO way and with NATO equipment, should the need arise for them to use them. I know a fair bit more, but I don't think I'm at liberty to post it here. One of the main driving forces behind this coalition is Petr Pavel.... a former General himself. The intention is to render Trump's election to power moot as far as Europe is concerned, should it happen.

Fair play to him, I kind of think he just trying to get Europe and the US to focus their minds and to keep all options open and not to get complacent about Ukraine and the threat to Europe from Russia. I doubt he really is considering sending troops any time soon, but it also sends a warning to Russia that Europe won't let the Russians win

It's a bit more than that. He was one of the first ports of call for Petr Pavel. Then he and Macron toured other European countries (including ours) enlisting support. There are already European forces on the ground in the western portion of Ukraine .... they are "training" at the moment, shall we say.

yeah I noticed Sunak recently quoted in the guardian that there are British personnel in Ukraine helping out at the moment, not sure what the below means lol
"Beyond the small number of personnel we do have in country supporting the armed forces of Ukraine, we haven’t got any plans for large-scale deployment,”
