Purchased by the Council.

Can't believe it's been closed and redundant for 8 years!

Hopefully the site can be brought back to life and be used to improve the leisure/tourism/hospitality offering for our town.. look what The Globe has done for Stockton's high street.

Good that its been purchased with a view to be saved, but I'll reserve judgement to see what they plan to do with it, and which companies get the work based on tender, mates in council etc, and council provided funding.

Great to see, I just hope they do something nice with it now. It won’t be cheap mind as it’s looking run down as is much of middlesbrough town centre tbf.

A multi-unit food & drink offering would be class, a little like Mackie Mayor in Manchester, if you've been there.

Yeah I love that place. Just worry whether it has the required footfall.

Will cost a fortune, building was shagged when it closed down, it's been rotting for years and will be full of water and pigeons.

It's one of those rock and a hard place things - If demolished, they're destroying town history. If converted it's a vanity project.

Have you see the 'Middlesbrough Then & Now' videos on Youtube? Stephen Mackenzie I believe the lads called.

When you see some of the buildings that have been demolished and what they're replaced with. Sickening.

Royal Exchange, Exchange Square (A66 Flyover)
North Riding Infirmary, Newport Road (Aldi & Travelodge)
Grand Opera House, Linthorpe Road (Offices and The Oven)
Hugh Bell School, Centre Square (Magistrate Courts)
Tower House, Linthorpe Road (McDonalds)

Yeah, great to still have them but I guess you need things to go in them, it's a balancing act. These buildings are expensive to repair and maintain - look at the hole Stockton dug for itself with the globe - and I love the globe but it's a constant drone of moshing about the funding, boro already has music venues and town hall so not sure what the crown coukd add beyond retail or food hall etc and not sure the space inside / layout would make a great food hall. It's tall but not that huge a footprint inside inside, you'd only get a few stalls and be right in the middle of cheap takeaway land

Sure there was talk of a small scale boutique/independent cinema going in there a couple of years back?

Be interesting to see what they do with it. Guessing they'll be touting it round to potential investors/occupants.

That process is still going on with the Captain Cook. A revamped/renovated but still empty shell waiting for a tenant.

There is a cinema planned for over captain cook way I think.

Several firms have had the crown and it's all fallen through so I suspect the costs are mega and it will need subsidising heavily
