The 3 points debacle

I've fully made my peace with it. I have concluded since then that had we stayed up, we'd have continued to overpay trouble-maker/prima-donna types and made them feel like they were better than they were, continued to have ego-driven disharmony between them and the 1995 squad, and ended up relegated in 1998 anyway. Maybe it was even a blessing! Big, belated thanks to Graham Kelly....

Never really got to the bottom of what we were told in that infamous phone call….Robson for one is adamant we would have put out a side if points deductions had been remotely possible. However, who knows how the inevitable defeat would have impacted such as the game we won on Boxing Day and the cup runs.

Jeez! That is some mental dexterity.

They can still stick 'em up their collective back passages.

Lamb was lead to believe it would be “alright” - the actual top brass fella (Parry?) who would have said no you can’t just not play it was allegedly playing golf at the time and unavailable for comment

According to Lamb :)

Must admit I'd forgotten the importance of that Coventry unexpected win
Didn't Coventry's win send Sunderland down rather than us as it turned out? Cementing Coventry's place as everyone's second club on Wearside!

we would always have went down a similar path.. who is to say that we make europe or actually win a cup if we stay up that season? more likely is that we get into bother earlier than we do.. and it cuts a lot deeper. it is what it is.. great memories and nothing really compares with any other club imo very special.

Yes I agree. The same decision makers would have found the same answer the same way, eventually, imo.

And I've also never fully bought into the idea that Roberto Carlos/Romario/Batistuta were all definitely signing:

Batigol never would have left La Viola at that time, and Roberto Carlos went to Real Madrid that summer. We might have got Romario, but he was a trouble maker and Robbo would have had all the same issues he had with Emo and Rav, which did nothing but drive a load of mistrust into the squad. I reckon we'd have signed Nadal and that Beto fella, and maybe even Ince/Boksic earlier than we eventually did. But we'd have still had Stampy and Curtis in the matchday squad.

Would we have kept the players that we lost? Juninho maybe..

Do we still end up with Gazza?

We were known as 'money bags Middlesbrough' around that time( an Alex Ferguson quote I think)
After reading blogs and listening to podcasts with ex players, it seems Roberto Carlos was the most likely one to sign.
He was close with Juninho and of course, the money would have been a huge incentive.

We maybe would have kept Juninho, and he maybe would have still done his fibula in!

We 100% still sign Gazza AND Merse, it was Robbo remember! He'd have played a 4 man midfield with Merson and Juninho cutting in from the wings, and Gazza and Mustoe in the middle, then whenever there was an injury (which is often) Stampy comes in.

Emo still goes AWOL in November 1997 during the second successive relegation dogfight.

Townsend and Maddison don't sign and Higgy and Beck get pedalled sooner than they eventually did, to accomodate Beto who still ends up at Napoli on loan.

He WAS close with Juninho but I strongly doubt Real Madrid wouldn't have been able to match our offer.

So.. who do we have instead of Maddo on the radio?
Maybe Nadal has a go, as he sticks around for a few years and becomes a fan favourite, helping to lead us back to the Championship as captain after our relegation to League 1 and nearly a second liquidation. His English gets good and he manages to get his nephew Rafael to do the half-time draw a few times.
